13 Misunderstandings A part of life Sometimes Funny....

14 Misunderstandings Other times not so much...

15 Misunderstandings In Christianity, Misunderstandings can be BIG problems. Denomination splits based on different interpretations

16 Misunderstanding God “God is a bodyguard god”
“If bad things happen, does that mean God is not good”?

17 Joseph Was sold into slavery by his brothers
Was bought and resisted the temptation of Potiphar’s wife Was falsely accused and imprisoned Was forgotten Became 2nd in command of Egypt Forgave his brothers

18 Joseph Lived a righteous life and still endured hardships
Did it all by obedience and faith that God would provide God was his master

19 Joseph Hebrews 11:22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.

20 Misunderstand Jesus? You’re Not the First
Pharisees and Teachers of The Law The Disciples

21 Pharisees’ Misunderstanding
After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead… John 11:47-48: Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

22 Pharisees’ Misunderstanding
They thought the Messiah would be a prophet from Bethlehem, not a miracle worker They paid more attention to their traditions than they did to the scripture When Jesus didn’t mesh with their expectations, they rejected him

23 Disciples’ Misunderstanding
After Jesus’ Resurrection... Acts 1:6-7: Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

24 Disciples’ Misunderstanding
They didn’t realize his kingdom was a spiritual one until the Holy Spirit came upon them They expected an earthly kingdom Where did they get the idea of the earthly kingdom?

25 Daniel 2:36-45 After King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream about a statue...
“This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king. Your Majesty, you are the king of kings. The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory; in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold. After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.”

26 Daniel 2:36-45 “Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron–for iron breaks and smashes everything–and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others. Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.”

27 Daniel 2:36-45 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands–a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.”

28 Daniel 2:36-45 “The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

29 Daniel 2:36-45 Golden head: Nebuchadnezzar and Babylon
Silver chest and arms: Darius and the Medes and Persians Bronze belly and thighs: Alexander the Great and Greece Iron/Clay legs and toes: The Roman Empire The Rock: The Messiah and the Everlasting Kingdom

35 Blindness to Truth Every example of misunderstandings was caused by having a preconceived desire The bodyguard God mentality is based on our desire to be happy and protected The Pharisees were afraid of losing power and influence The disciples wanted places of power in the new kingdom Hiro wanted justice for his brother

36 The Subconsious Misunderstanding
Jesus is our Hero <= easy to accept Jesus is our Master ⇐ difficult

37 Jesus is Lord You don't have to do anything for a hero to save you.
You have to have a relationship with your master if you want to be his. A true relationship requires sacrifice

38 What Am I Bringing to the Relationship?
Am I in a regular study of God’s word? Am I praying to him? Am I not just hearing, but also doing? Am I serving others? Even when I don't want to? Am I loving my enemies? Am I giving God the credit?

39 A Call to Action It is a call to obedience
The Bible is not just a portrait of God It is a call to obedience It is a call to relationship

40 Remember: Don't let your desires and perceptions cause you to misunderstand who God is Recognize that your reward is in Heaven, not Earth Let him be your Master AND Hero
