Clay Owl Sculpture Docent Material & Setup List: Docent Clean up List: FROM CLAY AREA: Make sure names are on base of art Check that each clay piece is labeled with student # and class # Place clay in the blue trays and store in clay drying area remember to label with teachers name & lesson date Shake off excess clay (outside) from canvas sheets and put away, and return to bins as you found them Close the lens cap to turn the projector off Send to parents about the lesson – thanks for doing this and leading the lesson! Cover each table in canvas sheet Pull white plastic bins and give each student: 1 piece of clay Wooden stick (for designs) Water cup (2-3 per table) Plastic fork Docents, please use a cocktail stick to label the bottom of clay pieces, student # and class # and store to dry in blue trays at back of room. =================================== In part 2 you will GLAZE your clay pinch pots so you will have special materials for this (Glaze, craft sticks, paint brush, water cups) and your clay pieces will be fired a second time before they are complete. PLEASE BOOK A 2ND 30 min slot for this This will be a 2 part lesson, today you will make the clay owl– this must be one solid piece, do not have students remove pieces Once complete, store the finished owls in the rack and leave to dry. Our clay docents will fire these and have them ready for you to glaze. Once you receive notification that they have been fired please schedule a 30min lesson in the art room to glaze the owls.

3 Today’s Lesson Skill Development:
Clay Owl Sculpture Today’s Lesson Skill Development: Today you are going to create your own owl sculpture using clay, once they are fired you will glaze your sculpture. Use clay to sculpt a three-dimensional form. An introduction to sculpture and the Artist Henry Moore To develop your skills in molding clay using the pinch and pul technique you were introduced to in 1st grade. Explain the lesson objective and description. Note this will be a 2 part lesson, they clay needs approx. 2 weeks to dry before it can be fired in the kiln. Once cooled you can book a time using the calendar online to glaze the animals.

4 What is sculpture? Clay Owl Sculpture
Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork (can be looked at from all sides) created by shaping or combining hard or soft materials. Materials may be worked by removal such as carving; or they may be assembled such as by gluing, or hardened such as by firing. Our lesson today is inspired by Henry Moore. He made his owl in plaster and finished it in bronze. ‘Owl’, 1966 Henry Moore Today we will recreate this Owl sculpture by Henry Moore, this owl is one of his smaller art works and it shows his skill in the details in the feathers of the bird and his love of wildlife. We will make our Moore inspired owl by molding clay using simple shapes and textures.

5 Who is Henry Moore? He was a British sculptor.
Clay Owl Sculpture Who is Henry Moore? He was a British sculptor. He was still working until 88 years old. His sculptures are all very large and are all over the countryside in the UK and in many different cities all over the world. He made his sculptures using simple shapes and made the model of the large sculpture he was planning in clay and then he would build his final piece in bronze or stone. ‘Oval with Points’, , Henry Moore This sculpture ‘Oval with Points’ made between by Moore. The surface of this bronze sculpture catches the light. The two points almost touch and draw your eye into the center of the shape. The photo of the sculpture gives you a sense of the scale of this larger than life piece. In 1974, in gratitude to the city or Toronto, Henry Moore donated more than 200 sculptures, drawings and prints to the Art Gallery of Ontario, which now boasts the largest public collection—more than 900 sculptures and works on paper—of Henry Moore's art work in the world.

6 One VERY famous sculpture:
Clay Owl Sculpture One VERY famous sculpture: Carved in marble this magnificent sculpture was created sometime between 100 and 130 B.C. She is thought to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch and is slightly larger than life size at 6 ft. 8 in high. Depicts Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Ask the students – what is sculpture, have a short discussion. Ask students if they know any types – clay, bronze, marble, wood etc. Docents next 3 slides show 3 very different styles of sculptures and art periods. Please use the room to discuss these in more depth we have various clay and marble artifacts exhibited. ‘Venus de Milo’

9 Process to make clay owl (part One):
Clay Owl Sculpture Process to make clay owl (part One): Make a ball with the clay. Drop the ball of clay 3-4 times to release air bubbles Mold your clay into the form of an owl Push 2 holes through the clay using your fingers to make the eyes. Pinch and pull clay to create wings and beak Draw designs on your owl using the wooden sticks or your fingers, draw out your wings etc. DOCENTS - Put student # / Class # name on bottom of piece This is part one of the lesson. To smooth out the clay gently dip fingertips into water and then blend / smooth the clay. Don’t use too much water! Docents, store the pieces in the blue clay trays and then leave along the wall to dry. Please put teacher name and date of class on a label on front of each tray. Have students finish any uncompleted projects.

11 Clay Owl Sculpture Process (painting): Our sculptures have been fired in a kiln so the clay will not soften up with water.  Now we will paint them, here are some ideas on how to decorate your owl: Be sure not to put glaze on too thick, especially near the bottom where it can drip down and stick to table or lazy Susan. Please do 2-3 coats – it dries fast! Do not leave any glaze on the bottom of their piece (wipe off if necessary). When finished, clean your brushes under running water very well. Store the pieces in the blue clay trays and then leave along the wall to dry. Please ensure the student# and class # are still visible.
