4 Expense Trends OLAP Browser Overview

5 OLAP Browser Overview We use Excel as our OLAP Browser
The “Pivot Table Field List” contains all of the data elements available in the cube. The Field List has logical groupings of the data elements. The data elements in a grouping are listed alphabetically

6 Expense Trends Webpage
Expense Trends has its own webpage. It can be found in the BI Analytics section of the DS web page. The metadata for Expense Trends can be found here. To learn more about Expense Trends, go here.

7 Analyzing Your Expenses

8 Consider the Question: What are my expenses for the last 5 fiscal years?
How would we answer this question today? What if we found interesting results, how would we pursue them? How could we use the Expense Trends OLAP cube to answer these questions?

9 The Expense Analysis cube

10 Let’s start with some simple selections
We are going to select “Expense Amt” and “Fiscal Year-Period.” We will move Fiscal Year Period down to Column Labels. This gives us “all” expenses for the entire University.

11 Let’s add Chart of Accounts
We are going to add “Chart of Account” to the query. Check the box next to Chart of Account

12 Let’s Limit to one specific Campus
Click the downward pointing ‘triangle’ next to chart of Accounts. Unselect ‘(Select All)’ Select the campus your are interested in

13 Let’s add College Code and Name
Under the By CFOAP section, open up the Organization Folder and click in the box next to College Code and College Name.

14 Let’s Limit to one Specific College Code
Click the downward pointing ‘triangle’ next to College Code Unselect ‘(Select All)’ Select the College Code your are interested in

15 Let’s Add Account Code Under the By CFOAP section, open up the Account Folder and click in the box next to Account.

16 We now have 5 years of expenses

17 Getting Access

18 Getting access is easy. You need to have your USC request access to the Expense Trends Analysis product. If you do not currently have access to any data in the EDW, you must also request access to Finance data.

You can read about requesting access on the DS Website

20 Getting Training

21 From the DS Website, Select “Get Help” and then “Classes and Workshops”

22 Select, “View the Training Schedule and register for classes you're interested in”

23 Enter your NetID and click Continue

24 Click next to Custom Lab: Expense Trends Analysis Overview and Click Continue

25 Click Select and you will be enrolled.
