In June 1941, Hitler sent 3 million soldiers and 3,500 tanks into Russia. The Russians were taken by surprise as they had signed the Nazi-Soviet Non -Aggression Pact in 1939.

12 Russian Tactics No surrender – Stalin ordered his troops to defend Russian cities at all costs. Fear – the Russian soldiers and civilians were frightened of the Russians and the Germans. Surprise attacks on German troops.

13 Change of tactics; November 1941
Germans launch an attack on Moscow Russians counter-attack and push Germans back 200 miles. Russian troops are now allowed to use a fighting retreat along with scorched-earth policy. Blitzkrieg is reversed. Winter starts German troops start to run out of fuel and supplies. German attention turns to Stalingrad.
