16 11. a) John wants to improve his cardiovascular fitness and he
knows that to do this he must exercise with his heart rate in the Target zone. Explain what is meant by the term target zone The range within which an individual needs to work for aerobic training to take place 60 – 80% of maximum heart rate (1) b) If John is 16 years old explain how he would calculate his target zone Max HR = 220 – age, so 220 – 16 = 204 60% of 204 and 80% of 204 60% = 123 – 80% = (1) (2)

17 12. Glenn is a good gymnast. He is looking to improve by
following a flexibility and speed programme. Suggest another fitness component he might need to develop (1) 2. The coach has given Glen a different training programme to that of his friend that is also a gymnast. Why might he do this? (1) 3. What major muscle is used to straighten the arm at the elbow during the handstand? (1) (3)
