Empowering Communities & Children for a Better Tomorrow

2 Purpose of this session
To give you an understanding of the purpose, the content and the way to use the participatory toolbox.

3 Replacement of PICD manual by Participatory toolbox
The Participatory toolbox replaces the PICD manual to better suite the purposes of Red een Kind. The Participatory toolbox contains additional tools, more information on how to use the tools, and additional tools for monitoring and evaluation.

4 The session & the manual
An overview is given on some requirements for good use of the toolbox and the different steps that are suggested as part of the use of the toolbox. This session is based on the content of the participatory toolbox manual. In this session only an overview is given. More detailed information on the participatory toolbox manual itself.

5 Purpose of Participatory Toolbox:
Facilitate the collection of data for community & program planning. Contribute towards awareness of community members about particular issues such as gender or child care. Contribute towards community and child empowerment through skills and knowledge development.

7 1. How to use the participatory toolbox
Apply principles such as: respect for diversity, facilitate participation of everyone and exploit indigenous knowledge. Make sure you have the required facilitation skills such as: asking the right questions, listening and being able to work different groups Facilitate the genuine participation of children

8 1. How to use the participatory toolbox
Know the various purposes for the use of the tools including awareness raising, collection of data, planning and monitoring and evaluation. Some tools can be used for various purposes such as data collection of and monitoring Tools are to be used at various times during the life of a program (so nut just at the beginning) Tools can be used related to integrated issues but also thematic issues can be addressed.

9 2. Start up activities Prepare program staff and external stakeholders
Get to know the target are through secondary data Together get an initial understanding of the situation in the target area (issues and what is being addressed by whom). The collected information to be used to plan the assessment and empowerment process in the target area

10 3. Community Entry Before the general public of the community participates in the data collection and empowerment activities leaders are first involved. Leaders are informed of the planned activities and involved in first awareness and data collection activities. Leaders assist in involving all vulnerable groups in the process. Particular tools such as Venn diagram and vulnerability ranking are used.

11 4. Mind Set Change During the start up certain issues are identified that need to be addressed. Participatory mindset change tools can be used to make community members aware of issues that need to be addressed Tools are included to promote child care and empowerment. Additional tools can be developed and collected.

12 5. Gathering Data To allow people to speak freely good to work with different groups (men, women, children). Asking the right questions while using the tool is determines the effectiveness of the exercise. Important is to document what people say while using the tool (such as seasonal calendar).

13 6. Giving meaning to the results
The outcomes of tools used are reviewed and analyzed. Where needed additional information is collected. Together community members do a prioritization of issues to be addressed. The community members think about their dreams for the future.

14 7. Planning and Design Tools to facilitate the develop a community-owned action plan. Community Planning Committee organized to design and manage the plans Actions, Stakeholders and resources are identified. Communities are being informed of the plans

15 8. Monitoring and Evaluation
Tools to help the community and staff to determine the success of planned activities. Repeated uses of tools (such as community map & seasonal calendar) shows the change over time. The empowerment of the community is monitored through the empowerment score card
