1 Enhancing Latent Fingerprints
Gesler, R.J.

2 Road Map Past Present Future How have we worked with fingerprints?
How are we working with fingerprints? Future How will we work with fingerprints?

3 Anatomy of a Fingerprint
There are five main types of patterns Minutia or the plural minutiae Reoccurring features that can be sorted, yet so unique that even identical twins with the same DNA possess individually identifiable fingerprints

4 Recorded Fingerprints
Inked or Scanned IAFIS database Latent fingerprints Crime scene evidence

5 Manually Marked Fingerprints
Latent is rolled and photographed Manually marked minutiae Some current systems are flawed

6 Proposed Algorithm Build a dictionary using reference fingerprints
A fingerprint is like a sentence with words and letters Correct the spelling of the sentence to enhance the latent fingerprint

7 Proposed Algorithm Square patches are created The patches overlap
The patches have variable resolution 3x3 pixel 5x5 pixel 7x7 pixel 9x9 pixel 11x11 pixel

8 Impossible Patterns

9 Proposed System Flow Chart

10 One Set of Patches

11 Dictionary Lookup Original patches ranked on similarity and one is chosen Neighboring patches compared at 80% tolerance and repeated 92% 69%
