OVERVIEW MP# I: Definition of Terms MP#II: Types of Decision Making MP# III: 7 Steps In Decision Making

6 I. Definition of Terms Decision- is a choice from available alternatives Decision Making- is the process of identifying problems, opportunities and then resolving them and making choices by identifying a decision, gathering information, and assessing alternative resolutions also defined as a process or sequence of activities involving stages of problem recognition, search for information, definition of alternatives and the selection of an actor of one from two or more alternatives consistent with the ranked preferences”.

7 II. Kinds of Decision Programmed Decision- A decision made in response to a situation that has occurred often enough to enable decision rules to be developed and applied in the future. Non-programmed Decision- A decision made in response to a situation that is unique, is poorly defined and largely unstructured, and has important consequences for the organization.

8 TYPES of Non-programmed Decision
a. Certainty- All the information the decision maker needs is fully available. b. Uncertainty- Information about alternatives and future event is incomplete c. Risk- A decision had clear-cut goals and good information is available, but the future outcomes associated with each alternative are subject to chance. d. Ambiguity- Goals to be achieved are unclear, alternatives are difficult to define, and information is unavailable.
