1 Speed & Velocity A closer look…

2 ? Recap Lets make sure that you remember what speed and velocity are before we continue… Speed Velocity

3 Speed Speed tells how fast an object is moving.
It is the distance traveled divided by the time it took to travel that distance. In other words…speed = distance/time Got it?

4 Measuring Speed The SI unit for speed is m/s… or meters per second.
Meters / second is used because… The SI unit for distance is METERS And the SI unit for time is SECONDS

5 Some other units that are used to measure speed are… Miles per Hour

6 Some other units that are used
to measure speed are… Kilometers Per Hour

7 Velocity + Now, about velocity. Velocity is just speed with direction.
That’s all. Yeah, it’s simple…I know. +

8 Velocity Directions Now, when I say “direction”, I’m not talking about North, South, East & West only... Direction means ANY DIRECTION. It could be things like…

9 Toward the river

10 Down the street

11 Across the room DUDE. OMG! This guy ALMOST dropped the deadly virus as he carried it across the room.

12 So, when you are looking at a velocity, there are 2 parts:
Speed & Direction For example… 10 m/s to the South

13 UNITS You should now what a unit is by now.
Don’t be STOOPID and get the wrong units when calculating speed. Lets check your skill with units…

14 Which of these would be a unit for speed?
Miles / foot Miles / kilometer Hours / meter Feet / second

15 Moving on… Now lets look at some ways that we use speed and velocity in our daily lives.

16 Baseball! Everyone knows the point of baseball
The batter tries to swing a bat and hit a ball thrown by the pitcher. The pitcher tries to throw the ball as fast as possible.

17 The batter must figure out the right time to swing the bat.
Baseball! The faster the ball is moving, the harder it will be for the batter to hit it. The batter must figure out the right time to swing the bat.

18 If he swings at the wrong time…
Bad timing… If he swings at the wrong time…

19 But, if he swings at the right time…
HOMERUN!

20 Most baseballs are thrown at an average speed of about
40 m/s. That is 90 mi/h!

21 The Space Shuttle Lets look at something with a speed that is a little bit higher than that of baseballs.

22 Make a guess, and write it on your paper by #7.
The Space Shuttle NASA regularly launches the Space Shuttle into outer space. How fast do you think the space shuttle must travel in order to make it to outer space? Make a guess, and write it on your paper by #7.

23 Space Shuttle Speed When it launches, the space shuttle moves at a speed of about 18,000 miles per hour! WOW!

24 Space Shuttle Speed Once the shuttle makes it into space, it starts to circle the earth. This is called “going into orbit”. The space shuttle will continue to move at about mph while in orbit.

25 Space Shuttle Landing When it is time for the shuttle to land, it must find a way to decrease its speed. If it tries to land while moving at 18,000 mph, it will crash and burn!

26 Space Shuttle Re-entry
After the shuttle slows down, it will be moving at about 360 mph when it finally lands.

27 Asteroids! Lets continue the space theme with a look at objects that move even faster than the space shuttle…

28 What is an asteroid? An asteroid is a fragment of rock that travels through outer space. Most asteroids in our solar system are located between the planets Mars & Jupiter. This area is called the “asteroid belt”.

29 However, some asteroids do not stay in the asteroid belt.
Rogue Asteroids However, some asteroids do not stay in the asteroid belt. Asteroids that travel freely through the solar system are called “Rogue Asteroids”.

30 Rogue asteroids travel at an average speed of…
Get ready for it… 56,000 Mph!

31 Danger! Rogue asteroids can be very dangerous.
If one of these asteroids hit Earth…

32 Then the devastation would be incredible!
Danger! Then the devastation would be incredible! It is believed that a Rogue Asteroid hit earth and caused the dinosaurs to become extinct. 

33 The Fastest Thing in the Universe
So, we looked at the speeds of a few different things. But we haven’t yet talked about the fastest thing in the universe. So, here is a challenge…

34 What is it? I want you to find out what the fastest thing in the universe is. Write it down on the back of your assignment. It will be worth +10 Bonus Points on your exam!

35 The End! Well, that wraps it up for the slideshow.
I hope you enjoyed it!  Be sure to complete the assignment. Also, there is no internet surfing allowed, even if you finished early. Sorry 
