Social Darwinism is the theory that society is subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals (survival of the fittest), Darwinists believed the elite classes in society possessed biological superiority in the struggle of existence. It was a sociological theory made by Herbert Spencer based off of Charles Darwin’s theory of biological evolution. It was highly influential in the beginning of the 20th century, but soon declined after World War 1. Discredited since it was seen as contributing to the rise of Nazi Germany. Social Darwinism was used as a justification for the doctrine of laissez faire capitalism, it also gave business leaders a philosophical justification for what they did (unscrupulous methods to get rich). Rich business owners with the best strategies were able to grow and become superior in an economy with little regulations from the government, while the poor we intended to stay on the bottom of the economy.
