Naming Ionic Compounds and Writing Formulas
2
Simple Ionic Naming First element Second element
a metal that is in group 1A, 2A or aluminum in group 3A Second element a nonmetal The metal keeps its name and the nonmetal changes it’s ending to –ide. Ex) MgBr2
3
Transition Metals Look at first element
it has a metal that is in the transition or other metal section Use a roman numerals to indicate the elements charge Name the second element changing the ending to –ide Ex) FeCl3 To figure out the charge use this formula Subscript(charge of cation) + subscript (charge of anion)= 0
4
Polyatomic Ions More than 2 elements in the compound.
Identify where the 2 halves of the compound are. Name each half First half can have a metal, a transition metal or a polyatomic ion (ammonium NH4) Second half is a nonmetal or polyatomic ion. All polyatomic ions have their own names and can be reference on the back of your periodic table. Ex) NH4Cl ammonium chloride Ex) Mg3(PO4)2
5
Try these Ba3(PO4)2 CuNO3 NH4OH
6
Writing Formulas Chemical formula from its name:
Write the symbol and charge for each ion Crisscross the charges so they become the subscripts on the other ion Add any parentheses if needed
7
Try these copper(II) chloride lithium phosphate iron (III) hydroxide
