9 Evolutionary Theory: Gender Differences and Infidelity
Among married individuals born between 1953 and 1974, 27.6 percent of men and 26.2 percent of women reported being unfaithful. Women said the reason for infidelity was “marital dissatisfaction” more than men Men’s infidelity is more likely to be a “one night stand” with someone of limited acquaintance, and to involve sexual intercourse.

10 David Buss surveyed 511 college students with the following results:
Would you be more distressed if you found that your romantic partner was (1) having sex with someone else or (2) was becoming emotionally involved with someone else? David Buss surveyed 511 college students with the following results: 83% of women found their partner’s emotional infidelity more upsetting(2), whereas only 40% of the men did. In contrast, 60% of the men experienced their partner’s sexual infidelity (1) as more upsetting and only 17% of the women did. Why?

11 Evolutionary psychology suggests that the answer largely revolves around the question of paternal uncertainty. Males never have absolute certainty of their biological parentage, whereas females do. In the pursuit of reproductive success, a man must always consider the possibility that he is investing all his resources in another man’s children. Females are more sensitive to the possibility of male abandonment, for it would decrease the survivability of her children. Thus, she is more concerned about her partner’s emotional involvement with another woman.
