1 EU Truck platooning: logistics business case Lóri Tavasszy TNO / TU Delft

2 Introduction Logistics business cases Fuel consumption
Loading & unloading Driver productivity Primary benefits?

3 (1) Fuel consumption Source: FHWA.DOT.GOV

4 (2) Container yard planning

5 (3) Driver productivity
150 mln. consumers 250 mln. 1h.

6 Single truck case Distance (km) 80 km/h
45 minute break after 4,5 h drive Range 720 km 960 720 480 240 break Time (h)

7 Co-operative case Distance (km) 2 trucks 80 km/h
2nd driver gets 50% task relief alternating lead Range: 960 km 960 720 480 240 From 720 to 960 km => 30% productivity increase Platoon switch 1,5 h 3 h Break Platoon switch Time (h)

8 benefits: fuel Future EU road transport performance 1700 bn – 3000 bn tonkm Transport price 0,1-0,15 Euro/tonkm Share of fuel costs in transport price 20%-25% Fuel consumption impact 5-10% Share of applicable km for platooning 25-50% Expected benefit A x B x C x D x E = 0,4 M€- 6 bn€/y

9 benefits: ports & hubs Future container transshipment Europe: 35 MTEU/y-50MTEU/y Road share (-sea, rail, waterways): 40%-60% Number of moves saved per TEU: 2-3 Cost per move: 30€-40 € Expected benefit = A x B x C x D = 1-4 bn€/y

10 benefits: driver productivity
Future EU road transport performance 1700 bn – 3000 bn tonkm Applicable tonkms = 10-20% (longer distances, platooning opportunies) Transport price 0,1-0,15 Euro/tonkm Productivity increase = 10%-30% Indirect benefits: p.m. Expected benefit = A x B x C x D = 2-27 bn€/y

11 Conclusion 3 Business Cases: 3-36 bn €/y Middle scenario: 12,5 bn €/y
Key assumptions Organisation Technology Economy Legal Further scenarios V2I Green waves Automated docking Dynamically dedicated lanes Inter-terminal transport Alternative driver tasks distance Flow volume Platooning opportunity

12 Thank you for your attention

13 Propositions: Opportunities
The transport industry should create market places for platooning, before Uber does. The truck driver is responsible for the 'perfect match‘ and will get incentives for this. Gamification will support the implementation of platooning. Platooning will lead to innovation in loading and unloading processes. Benefits lie in increased productivity, not reduced costs

14 Propositions: Conditions
Platooning will start bringing benefits when large volumes are consolidated via large distribution parks linked to the TEN-T network. Platooning will only hit off once driving time regulations have been adapted to driver task automation. Platooning volumes will be highest on intermediate distances. Increased border controls are a threat to the development of platooning.

15 Propositions: Impacts
Platooning will create new jobs, better working conditions and higher wages for the transport sector. Platooning offers equal opportunities for small, mid size and large transportation companies.
