Ethnicity –A group’s self-identification; how people see themselves
Different from “culture”—what people believe or do
Different from “race”—a controversial category based exclusively on physical characteristics
Based on a variety of characteristic (cultural, historical, physical, etc.)
Emergent Ethnicity
The creation of an ethnic identity
Resurgent Ethnicity
An ethnic identity that has faded and then reemerges

3. Ethnicity 2 Acculturation Assimilation
The process of learning to operate in a new culture
Intention/effect of retaining original culture
Assimilation
The adoption of a new culture and the abandonment of aspects of the original culture
Intention/effect of replacing original culture with new culture
Cultural assimilation
Preliminary stage
Immigrant has adopted enough culture traits to be a functioning member of a new culture
Functional assimilation
Final stage
The fusion of an ethnic group with the majority society

Ethnicity 3
Locations where there are concentrated populations of a particular ethnic group
Ethnic Neighborhood—within cities
Ghetto—an inferior type of ethnic neighborhood
Originally, an Italian term for areas of cities where Jews were forced to live
More broadly, poor urban neighborhoods where ethnic minorities are concentrated
Ethnoburb—in suburbs
Ethnic Island—in rural areas

5. Ethnicity 4 Segregation—the separation between social or ethnic groups
Index of Dissimilarity
A common measure of segregation
Compares the population in a neighborhood to population of the entire area.

6. Ethnic Provinces
Large areas of a state associated with a particular ethnic group
Example: the Southwestern U.S.
Often connected to political or military conflict
Example: Tamil areas of Sri Lanka
Sometimes the subject of government attempts to change the ethnic composition
Example: Hanification—the policy of the Chinese government to settle Han (ethnic Chinese) in such provinces
