1 solving and graphing inequalities
Today’s Lesson: What: solving and graphing inequalities Why: To solve one and graph one-step inequalities.

2 How can you remember that? Here’s a little trick: open closed
Open or Closed Circle?? When graphing the answer to an inequality on a number line, we use an _________________________ circle for > or < signs, and a _____________________ circle for ≥ or ≤ signs. How can you remember that? Here’s a little trick: DOES THE BIRD GET THE WORM ?!? If the bird “gets the worm,” his belly is full, so we use a ____________________________ circle. If the bird does NOT get the worm, his belly is empty, so we use an _________________________ circle. open closed closed open

3 Does the bird get the worm?? Put “x” on the left side FIRST!!!
Graph the following inequalities on the given number lines: x ≥ -4 2 < x Does the bird get the worm?? Put “x” on the left side FIRST!!!

4 x ≤ 0 -6 ≥ x Solve AND graph the following inequalities (switch sign when needed): -6x ≥ -12 x ≤ 2

5 -9 + x < -4 x < 5 24 ≤ x + 20 x ≥ 4 4) 𝑥 −2 > 5 x < -10

6 END OF LESSON The next slides are student copies of the notes for this lesson. These notes were handed out in class and filled-in as the lesson progressed. NOTE: The last slide(s) in any lesson slideshow (entitled “Practice Work”) represent the homework assigned for that day.

Name: _____________________________________________________________________________ Date: _____/_____/__________ Math-7 PRACTICE “solving / graphing inequalities” Does the bird get the worm? Match each inequality with its graph:

10 Solve AND graph the following inequalities (switch sign when needed):
15x ≥ -45 5 – x < 7 58 ≤ x + 50 4) x > 2 - 3 5) < -4 x 6) x > 5 2 7) x < -48 8) 𝑥 −4 ≤ -2
