Scheme of Redemption
2
Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet
3
Recap "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin God was not in a dilemma when sin entered the lives of man View the Bible as one book, with 66 chapters, and the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin
4
Recap Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence
Strife and tragedy were unheard of Adam did not lie awake at night stressing over how he was going to resolve a problem in his life or how he was going to survive. Genesis 3-12 – “The Background of Redemption” The true division of the Bible takes place at Genesis 3:6. Everything changed here
5
Recap Sin the source of all suffering
No one is immune from the effects of sin, regardless of whether it is a direct or an indirect effect. All will suffer because of it. God is not to blame – It was our choice Each of chose suffering, as each of us has taken from the forbidden fruit in some way or another. Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
6
Sin Changed Everything for Mankind
The ground became cursed Genesis 3: Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field Do you ever get annoyed with briars/thorns? They're a result of the curse of sin!
7
Sin Changed Everything for Mankind
Genesis 3:19 - By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return Manual labor became the means to sustain life (also mentioned in verse 17) Adam will die, just as God said Surviving suddenly became a necessity that Adam did not have before, and it would not be easy!
8
Sin Changed Everything for Mankind
Genesis 3:16 - I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you Women suffer much more in child birth Marital strife also a result of sin Is it interesting to you that Eve’s relationship with Adam seemed to have been changed as part of her curse?
9
The First Gospel Sermon?
When was the first gospel sermon preached? Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel
10
First Gospel Sermon Is Preached
"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed" What is being spoken of here? Is it a discussion of humans and snakes no longer getting along? A metaphorical prophecy of Christ
11
First Gospel Sermon Is Preached
"He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel" What is this a metaphor of? Redemption While Satan may deal a injuring blow to Christ, Satan will be dealt a deathly blow Satan may have won a battle, but he will lose the war From here, God will begin the journey to the cross to redeem mankind from sin
12
The destruction of sin grows
After sin enters the lives of man, the next story we read is the first murder in human history Genesis 4:2-5 - Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground. 4 Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering; 5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard
13
Speculations on Cain’s offering
Cain’s offering was not what God had commanded Assumption is that God had given Adam, Eve, and family instructions on sacrifices Genesis 3:21 - The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them Possible that this skin came from an animal sacrifice that God performed to instruct Adam and Eve?
14
Speculations on Cain’s offering
Cain’s offering was not of the “first fruits” “Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground. 4 Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions” (4:3-4) Abel’s sacrifice seemed to be “all-in”, as it were. The best and first of what he had, and not just something he scraped together
15
Speculations on Cain’s offering
Cain’s offering did not take the life of a living thing Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord All throughout the scriptures, the death of a living creature to handle sin was commonplace We see this in the Old Law We see this ultimately handled in the death of Son of God Himself, in human form, on the cross
16
God and Cain Genesis 4:5-7 - So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” Was God angry with Cain? No – In fact, God seems to act like it’s not really that big of a deal. “Just correct it” (repent).
17
God and Cain Genesis 4:8 - Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. The destructive nature of sin and it’s effects: On Cain – Caused him to be cursed On Abel – Effected his death On Adam and Eve – Caused the loss of a son Genesis 4:25 – Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him”.
18
The destruction continues
Genesis 4:17-24 gives us info on Cain and his descendants. We see his descendants dwindle further into evil Vs Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.“ Note also that Lamech is a 5th generation descendant of Cain, yet is fully aware of Cain’s curse from possibly hundreds of years earlier
19
The path to the cross begins
Genesis 4: Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord. Can we safely assume that Adam and Eve may have instilled a love of God into Seth?
20
The path to the cross begins
Genesis 5 – Traces the lineage from Seth to Noah Genesis 5:21-24 – Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. 22 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Who else was taken up by God without dying? Elijah (2 Kings 2:11)
21
The path to the cross begins
Genesis 5:28-30 – Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and became the father of a son. 29 Now he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed.” Here again, there is a clear understanding in Seth’s lineage of what all has taken place since Genesis 3:6, and what it takes to live for God
22
Two VERY different Lamech’s
Lamech of Genesis 4 Descendant of Cain Very proud of his evil and cursed ancestry Lamech of Genesis 5 Descendant of Seth Very humble What they have in common A clear understanding of what has occurred since Genesis 3:6 Why is this important?
24
Background of redemption
Summary Background of redemption Where it all began How we messed it up God begins His plan to remedy our sin problem First revelation of that plan is made Descendants of Cain and Seth
25
