What is the purpose of reading? To gain something from the written word Entertainment, Information, Wisdom, Understanding Is reading an active or passive activity? What would be the difference between active and passive reading? When you read, do you believe you read actively or passively?

Reading is like being a catcher! Pitcher is the Sender or AUTHOR of a work Catcher is the Receiver or READER of a work The Ball is the WORK being communicated The Art of Catching is the art of being able to catch every kind of ball The Art of Reading is the art of being able to read every kind of communication

4 When reading, you will experience one of two things:
Challenge of Reading When reading, you will experience one of two things: You understand everything In this case, you can only have gained information You do not immediately understand everything In this case, you must work to pull yourself up to the author’s level This is skilled reading, and it is NOT easy

6 Four Levels of Reading Level One – Elementary Reading
“What does the sentence say?” The cat sat on the hat. Level Two – Inspectional Reading Systematically Skimming Get the most out of it in a small amount of time Level Three – Analytical Reading Getting the most out of a book given lots of time “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.” – Francis Bacon Level Four – Syntopical Reading Reading many books on the same subject and relating them to one another

7 Before reading something you’re going to study…
Inspectional Reading Before reading something you’re going to study… Look at the Title, Author, Visuals What does it mean? What does it make you think about? Where have you come across the idea before? What about subtitles? What do you know about the author? What does he bring to the discussion? What do the visuals tell you? Have a purpose for reading Learning a new concept? Learning an opinion on an issue? Checking an idea for a paper?

Inspectional Reading Look at information and questions that may be included. Helps to know what to look for. Skim beginnings and ends of several paragraphs. 1. Look for the main ideas, characters, events, etc. that are discussed

Inspectional Reading Let’s Practice It - Reading Activity – 5 Min. Examine the reading assignment I’ve given you… Before you read, write down everything you know about the topic. Make sure you note any pictures, graphics, author information, etc. Before you read, state your purpose in reading. Before you read, look at the questions. What do the questions tell you about the topic? Write your answers. Then, skim several paragraphs, write down the main characters, ideas, or anything that jumps out.
