Romanticism Web Quest A search for meaning in our lives……

2 American Romantic Movement 1800-1865
Question 1: What were some of the main Romantic beliefs? List and explain 8 that you find most interesting.

3 How did the Romantic Age differ from the Age of Enlightenment?
Write a list of of the most significant differences between the two periods. What do you believe is the reason the two periods are so vastly different? Explain and support your answer in a paragraph.

4 Who were the American Romantics?
Find five American Romantic writers and for each writer describe/summarize their style and main contributions in 3-5 sentences. (Scroll past British---American writers are at the bottom.)

5 Art in the Romantic Era Write down 5-7 general observations about Romantic tendencies in art; ie. Subject matter, use of color, style

6 Music of the Romantic Era
Listen to different compositions; then write 5-8 characteristics of Romantic music.

7 Poetry of the American Romantics
Read several of poems from different Romantic poets. What are some of the similarities you see in theme, subject matter, style, etc.? Write them down and be sure to give examples of each. You should find at least 5 similarities. (Be sure to scroll down to the “American Writers”, male and female. Under each poet you will find links to some of their poems.)

8 Romantic Short Stories
Listen to an audio recording or read the text of several Romantic short stories. Draw a Venn Diagram or fill out a Comparison-Contrast organizer for TWO of the works, focusing on the way in which they reflect Romantic elements and themes. 9 Comparative Analysis (Final Essay)
Select TWO works from different genres that reflect a similar Romantic element; ie. A poem and musical composition, or a short story and a painting. In a comparative essay, analyze the similarities between the two works. Be sure to keep the focus on how the two pieces reflect a Romantic element.
