2 Directions: The first red word = 40 words
Directions: The first red word = 40 words. The second red word = 50 words. The third red word = 60 words. The student reads orally. First, read the entire excerpt with the student using ScORe. Then, the student reads that day’s excerpt out loud independently. Stop at the student’s designated target level (40, 50, or 60 words). Do this 3 times, recording the time after each reading. Record daily times on a graph. (When student consistently reaches 15 seconds, move up to the next level.)

3 The next day: The next day, the student rereads the previous day’s story excerpt (either silently or out loud). Then, move to the next story excerpt. Then use the repeated reading technique described in the previous slide.

4 Day 1 Mad Molly was watching TV
Day 1 Mad Molly was watching TV. She called out, “Help me, help me Bob the Magical Helper Elf.” Bob appeared. He was one foot tall and wore tight shorts. “How can I help you?” he asked. Mad Molly said, “I want a chocolate shake.” “What?” asked Bob. “I said I want a chocolate shake,” said Mad Molly. “What’s wrong with you?”

5 Day 2 “But I’m a helper elf,” said Bob. “My job is to help people
Day 2 “But I’m a helper elf,” said Bob. “My job is to help people.” “That’s right,” said Mad Molly. “So help me out by making me a chocolate shake. And put lots of chocolate in that shake.” “But that’s not helping,” said Bob. “You can’t order me around. You’re not the boss of me.” “Listen elf boy,” said Mad Molly, “Get in that kitchen and make me a chocolate shake before I...”

6 Day 3 “Yes,” said Bob. He went to the kitchen
Day 3 “Yes,” said Bob. He went to the kitchen. He started to get some ice cream out of the freezer to make a shake. But he was only 1 foot tall. It’s hard to open the freezer door when you’re just one foot tall. He moved a stool over by the door. It was a little too close to the door. When he opened the door, it hit the stool. The stool fell over and Bob landed on the floor.

7 Day 4 The stool made a loud noise. Bob yelled, “Ouch
Day 4 The stool made a loud noise. Bob yelled, “Ouch!” as he landed on the floor. “Hey” yelled Mad Molly, “What’s going on in there?” Bob said, “Oh nothing. Nothing at all.” “What’s all that noise in there?” asked Mad Molly. “Oh, that’s just that dog jumping around,” said Bob. “But I don’t have a dog,” said Mad Molly. “You better not be making a mess in there!”

8 Day 5 “Oh, said Bob. He thought quickly
Day 5 “Oh, said Bob. He thought quickly. “Well I was just pretending to be a dog, in case you might someday have a dog.” “Oh,” said Mad Molly. “Well hurry up with my chocolate shake!” she yelled. Bob pushed the stool over toward the freezer door and got out the ice-cream. He had to push the stool over to the cupboard to get a dish and a spoon. Finally, he had to push the stool over to the refrigerator to get the chocolate sauce.

9 Day 6 The last thing Bob needed was an electric mixer
Day 6 The last thing Bob needed was an electric mixer. He pushed the stool over to the shelf and got this. He put 5 scoops of ice cream in the mixer. He put lots of chocolate sauce in the mixer. Then he turned on the mixer until the ice cream and chocolate were smooth and creamy. “Here you go,” said Bob as he handed Mad Molly her chocolate shake. “Hey,” said Mad Molly, “What’s this little shoe doing in here?” “Oh dear, said Bob.
