1. Don’t let this happen 2. Come up with a new extension 3. Make openings extension important and claim it for yourself

3 1. Don’t let your extension be stolen

4 In Preparation time Think about different arguments
Discuss with your partner which ones are the strongest

5 Analysing the problem What is the problem?
How does this problem manifest? Why does this problem exist? How can we get rid of the problem? How do we solve this problem?

6 THS the objectification of men.
What is the problem? Objectification of women How does this problem manifest? Porn, advertisements, media Why does this problem exist? Sex sells, media companies are primarily male dominated How can we get rid of the problem? Showing that objectification is bad How do we solve this problem? Society needs to understand how absurd certain objectifications are.

7 2. Come up with a new extension

8 Stakeholders Who are the main actors in this debate?
How are different groups affected? Why should we care about a certain group?

9 THW introduce school days from 8am to 6pm in all primary schools.
What stakeholders can you think of? Why are they important?

10 Flip the Argument Opposition says X is bad, explain why X is good
Give more reasons! Opposition “This will lead to more competitiveness amongst school kids”  Explain why this is good!

11 Clash with the opposition
Look for their strongest point Explain why this point won’t happen but instead something good will happen Make your response to their strongest material your strongest material  Give reasons, talk about incentives

12 THS vigilant groups in countries with very high crime rates.
OO: “Vigilant groups are unaccountable” CG: “Vigilant groups are more accountable than the police” Give reasons why the police is not accountable. Give reasons why vigilant groups are more accountable.

13 3. Make openings extension important and claim it for yourself

14 Explain how the change Opening talks about can be achieved
Often Opening teams forget important links. Fill in those links Say that they are really important “Opening has proven that ___________ would be really bad. Therefore we should not do __________ if ____________ happens. Our extension will be an explanation how ___________happens” outcome motion outcome outcome

15 THBT all states should collectively aggregate and evenly distribute all revenue from mineral wealth globally on a per capita basis Opening Opposition: “If nobody invests in minerals bad things will happen for example developing countries will lose profit from production and a lot of things couldn’t be produced” What have they missed? Closing Opposition: “Obviously we shouldn’t implement this motion if nobody invests into minerals anymore and the bad impacts opening has told you about happen. We will proof why nobody will invest into mineral wealth anymore.”

16 Weigh up arguments Explain why Openings arguments are important.
Say things like “we will tell you what this means in real life” so you seem as if you have an extension Give examples Use rhetoric  If you give examples about specific groups this can still be credited as a new contribution to the debate

17 Be persuasive / Explain Impacts
Being persuasive = give examples why something will happen and explain incentives Impacting = give examples of what will happen Opening “this will cause an economic crisis” Closing “This will cause an economic crisis because banks won’t give out loans anymore because they think this is too risky. An economic crisis means people will loos jobs. Governments will implement austerity policies, that means less money for health care, education,…”

18 Opening: “this will cause an economic crisis”
Closing: “This will cause an economic crisis because banks won’t give out loans anymore because they think this is too risky. An economic crisis means people will loos jobs. Governments will implement austerity policies, that means less money for health care, education,…”

19 Be Cristal clear!!!

20 In the worst case…. …bring at least some small arguments, examples that are new. …destroy the other side.

21 Questions?
