Motion Review Distance, Displacement, Speed, & Velocity
2
By the end of this presentation, you should be able to:
Calculate net forces. Describe the difference between ‘speed’ and ‘velocity’. Calculate the speed of an object. Interpret distance/time graphs.
3
Net Forces If the blue team pulls the rope to the left with a force of 20 N and the red team pulls on the rope with a force of 23 N in the opposite direction, what is the net force? Fred pushes the dresser with 100 N to the right and Mike pushes with 100 N to the left, what is the net force? What type of force is this?
4
A child pushes down on a box lid with a force of 25 N
A child pushes down on a box lid with a force of 25 N. At the same time her friend pushes down on the lid with a force of 30 N. The spring on the box lid pushes upward with a force of 60 N. Can the children close the box? Why or why not?
5
Motion Motion Change in position in relation to a reference point.
6
Distance vs. Displacement
Displacement for homerun = 0 Distance = total Distance = the total length traveled. Displacement = the difference between where you started and where you ended.
7
Think Pair Share Differentiate between distance and displacement.
8
Speed vs. Velocity Speed is simply how fast you are travelling…
20 m/s Velocity is “speed in a given direction”… 20 m/s east
9
Think Pair Share If you are told that a hurricane is moving northeast at 94 miles per hour, what do you know? The hurricane’s speed The hurricane’s velocity The hurricane’s position The hurricane’s displacement Explain why you chose your answer.

Calculating Speed Speed rate of motion distance traveled per unit time
12
s d t
13
How do I know what to solve for?
Speed = How fast … ? Distance = How far … ? Time = How long … ?
14
Solve it A car is traveling 60 miles/hour for 3 hours. How far did it travel?
15
Solve it A cat moves 20 meters in 2 seconds. What is its speed?
16
Solve it A bus travels at 45 miles/hour for 5 miles. How long did it travel?

Distance-Time Graphs Upward Curve = Speeding Up
Downward Curve = Slowing Down Straight Horizontal Line = Stopped

Graphing Motion Distance-Time Graph What is happening to the speed of the object? How can your prove it?
22
Graphing Motion How would you describe the motion on this graph?
Speed-Time Graph How would you describe the motion on this graph? constant accel. accel. (constant velocity)
23
Graphing Motion Who started out faster? Who had a constant speed?
Distance-Time Graph A B Who started out faster? Who had a constant speed? Describe B from min. Find their average speeds.
