5 It was June 28, 1914, and the people of Bosnia crowded the city streets. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, next in line to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was in town for a visit. As he and his wife rolled along in their open car, a gunman attacked. Both the archduke and his wife were killed.

6 The assassination did more than take the lives of the royal couple
The assassination did more than take the lives of the royal couple. It upset the balance among the powers of Europe. Within weeks, these powers were at war.

7 Though the fighting spread quickly, the tensions that led to what we now call WW1, went back years. They grew as nations formed empires, built up armies, and made alliances.

8 Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled, “A Rise in Nationalism”, and “Competing for Empires”, (Page 658) and answer the following comprehension questions: What are the pros and cons of nationalism? Why did nations compete for colonies?

9 Independent Practice Read a passage titled, “Military Buildup, a Network of Alliances” (Page 659) and answer the following comprehension questions: How did military buildup lead to WW1? What was the alliance system? How did the alliance system create a dangerous situation?

10 Group Work Create a “KWL” chart based upon the beginning of our WW1 unit.
