Skewered! Life in the wild really is red in tooth and tusk.. as this buffalo discovered when it unwisely butted an elephant. The killer elephant, in Masai Mara, Kenya, impaled the unfortunate beast on its tusks, lifting the 500kg buffalo high into the air, before dropping its lifeless body again. Picture: Kim Murer/Caters

A baby elephant wallows in the mud, but then found himself unable to stand up again. Heavy rain in the Masai Mara created the perfect mud hole, and the youngster wasted no time in going for a roll. However, when he tried to get to his feet again, he was simply unable to stand and kept slipping over. The moment was captured on camera by professional wildlife photographer Andy Rouse, who had been following the herd. Picture: Andy Rouse

The longer scientists study elephants, the more we realize how special they are. These are creatures that live for around 65 years. Females teach younger elephants about the geography and food of their world, and how to raise young. Elephants display many of the emotions we associate with humans: for example, they love, play and empathies with each other. Image by Martin Harvey
