Georgia Battles Revolutionary War Battles February Battle of Kettle Creek Led by Elijah Clarke Patriots were outnumbered Raised morale of GA patriots Increased Patriots supplies (took British horses and weapons) Set the stage for future Southern backcountry victories Austin Dabney – slave solider April Battles of Lexington & Concord, MA First Battle of the Revolutionary War “shot heard round the world” (Emerson) GA protests began b/w Patriots v Loyalist 2nd Continental Congress (1775) 12 colonies unhappy with GA (L. Hall only) Created Continental Army w. Gen. Washington Gov. Wright arrested by Liberty Boys Signed Declaration of Independence (1776) September/October Battles of Saratoga, NY Turning point of the Revolutionary War French entered war as American allies October Siege of Savannah (NOT!) By 1778, British held Savannah & Augusta Patriots held backcountry GA Patriots & French attacked Savannah but failed to recapture Savannah Clarke recaptured August in 1781 Savannah stayed British until 1782 October 1781 – Battle of Yorktown, VA Final battle of the Revolutionary War Gen. Washington & French allies beat British Gen. Cornwallis British surrendered in America Treaty of Paris of 1783 – ended the war

Ellis (L) Sir Wright (L) 3 SIGNERS OF Declaration of Independence Button Gwinnett(P) – English born, politician, died in a dual Lyman Hall (P) – US born, attended 1st congress but did not vote, minister, doctor, GA Governor, UGA George Walton (P) – US born, youngest signer, lawyer, GA Governor 3 GA HEROES Elijah Clarke (P) – Battle of Kettle Creek (1779) Clarke led rebel militia group and took British horses and weapons (Clarke County named) Austin Dabney(P) – only slave solider at the Battle of Kettle Creek. Fought for owner. Rewarded land/free after war. Nancy Hart (P) – held/killed British soldiers in her home for arrest (Hart county named) 3 NATIONAL HEROES George Washington (P) – F&I War then Rev. War then President! Thomas Jefferson (P) – author of the D of I Paul Revere(P) – called the alarm at Battle of Lexington, Sons of Liberty
