5 What is a companion book?
A companion book is book written along side a novel that you read. It contains multiple chapters that analyze (not summarize) different aspects of the novel. Each chapter will contain different types of literature analysis essays. The novel determines the type of literature analysis.

6 Number The Stars by Lois Lowry
Our Companion Book for Number The Stars by Lois Lowry Using Number The Stars, we will create 3 chapters that analyze this novel. Chapter 1: A Character’s Journey Chapter 2: Symbolism Chapter 3: Connecting to My Life

7 Structure of an expository essay
An expository essay is like an umbrella. There are many different types of expository writing i.e. descriptive, literary, informational, research, etc. When writing expository essays, the basic structure is the same. You have an introduction which consists of your hook, bridge and thesis statement. It contains body paragraphs that support your thesis, and a conclusion paragraph. The only thing that changes is the how you set up your body paragraph(s). It depends on the type of expository essay. This will determine how your body paragraphs will be structured and written.

8 What literary essayist do:
Re-read the text with their thesis in mind Search (scan) the text for the most compelling evidence that will support their thesis Collect evidence from the text to support their thesis

9 A Character’s Journey This chapter of your book will focus on how Annemarie changes from a frightened little girl into a brave young woman. For example: In the novel, Number The Stars, Annemarie Johansen admits that she would rather not have to be brave, but ultimately is, when her best friend’s life is on the line.

10 How does this work in “Ribbons”?
Did Stacy undergo a change? Stacy’s journey helped her realize that her grandmother really did care about her and only wanted her to be safe from harm. It helped her to understand that things can have a different meaning from one person to another, depending on their life experience.

11 What would that look like in an essay?
Intro: Basic statement about – Understanding – Everybody brings something different to the table according to what they have experienced in their lives. Elaborate – Often times it is difficult for us to look over differences and find what we have in common. Thesis – In the short story “Ribbons”, Stacy’s relationship with her grandmother illustrates the importance of looking at a situation from all perspectives. 12 Now you try with NUMBER THE STARS
Hook – statement about fear/bravery Bridge – elaborate your point Thesis – In Lois Lowry’s novel, Number The Stars, Annemarie transforms from a frightened little girl into a brave young woman.

Today, I can… Analyze a character’s journey in my novel by writing an analytical essay. C – Voice Level 0 H – Your Brain A – Independent Activity M – Sharpen Pencils and Get Materials P – Read and Write S – I will be successful!

14 Finding evidence for our thesis
Choose a character from Number The Stars. If you are using the provided thesis statement, then you will choose Annemarie. Create a tree map – with two categories – “Character Before” and “Character After” Find text that you could used in your paper that shows how the character was in the beginning of the story and how they were in the end.

15 What would the body look like?
Let’s do one for “Ribbons” Body Paragraph #1 Stacy, an 11 year old girl, is struggling with her relationship with her grandmother, who has just moved to San Francisco from Hong Kong. At the beginning of the story, Stacy feels that her grandmother gave her brother, Ian, “all of her attention” and this is a source of conflict between them. In spite of her feelings, Stacy chooses to give her grandmother the benefit of the doubt, since her grandmother saved her mother from living in Communist China.

16 What would the body look like?
Body Paragraph #2 Then, she decides to win her grandmother over by sharing her love for ballet. Little did Stacy know that the ribbons would trigger such a negative reaction, “as she looked back at the satin ribbons, it was with a hate and disgust that I had never seen before.” Later, Stacy accidentally walks in on her grandmother soaking her feet in the bathroom. This is when she realizes that her grandmother’s feet had been bound at a young age, “she mistook my toe-shoe ribbons for old ones.”

18 conclusion Restate the topic Leave readers something to think about
Call to action As a result, Stacy made a conscious effort to understand the situation from her grandmother’s point of view. It is important that we realize that not everybody is the same and that we are all a product of our own life experience. Choosing to be more understanding of others can only be positive and help people overcome many personal conflicts.

20 Revising and Editing Today, you will revise and edit your character’s journey essay using the provided checklist. Ensure that your quotes support your thesis. If they do not, you will need to find new quotes. Be sure that your quotes are embedded in your own sentences.

21 Finish Drafting! This week, you wrote a rough draft for your character’s journey of your companion book. Today, you will complete the final draft of your essay. Remember that you should have correct spelling and grammar in addition to your best writing. Remember that the purpose of a companion book is to teach someone about the novel you have read, in this case about characterization. If you have not explained in a way someone can understand, you need to re-write.

24 thursday, October 27, 2016 Today, I can…
Analyze symbolism in my novel by writing an analytical essay. C – Voice Level 0 H – Your Brain A – Independent Activity M – Sharpen Pencils and Get Materials P – Read and Write S – I will be successful!

25 What is Symbolism, and why do authors use it?
Questions Notes What is the definition of symbolism? Is every object a symbol? How do I know if an idea is being hinted at or referenced? The use of symbols (ordinary objects or characters) to hint at something much more meaningful to the reader. No, symbolism refers to objects or characters that are referenced repeatedly to express an idea. An idea must be present each time the object is referenced. For example, if there is a river that a character talks or thinks about right before a major change happens, the river is a symbol for change in that character’s life. Summarize!

26 "Wings" Macklemore (feat. Ryan Lewis)
Looking at the lyrics to the poem, highlight or underline anything you view as symbolic in the song. Jot down a sentence for each one explaining what you thought was symbolic about that image, character, object, etc. Be prepared to discuss when the song is over.

27 Your Novel Now that you have learned what symbolism is and practiced identifying its meaning, you will need to identify it in your novel. What symbols could there be in Number The Stars? Let’s jot some down. Now, using text evidence, determine what it might represent.

28 friday, October 28, 2016 Monday, October 31, 2016
Today, I can… Analyze symbolism in my novel by writing an analytical essay. C – Voice Level 0 H – Your Brain A – Independent Activity M – Sharpen Pencils and Get Materials P – Read and Write S – I will be successful!

29 How do I write an essay about a symbol?
Questions Notes How will I format this essay? How do I add text evidence? This essay will still have an introduction with a hook, bridge, and thesis. It will have one body paragraph where you prove (using text evidence) that you have identified a symbol in your novel. Then it will have a conclusion with three sentences. I will add at least two EMBEDDED quotes in my body paragraph. Summarize!

30 Example “We all need somebody to lean on,” is a famous lyric from Bill Withers “Lean on Me.” What he means by this is that at some point we all have to rely on others to help us when times get tough. In “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes, Roger has a hard life, and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones helps him both literally and symbolically when she provides him ten dollars for his blue suede shoes. Minding her own business, Mrs. Jones was walking down the street when, Roger, a young boy, ran up behind her and “tried to snatch her purse.” Instead of calling the police, she gives him the help he desperately needed. When she hears that, “There’s nobody home at my house,” she takes him home with her, allows him to wash up while she makes him a meal, and even offers him a piece of “her ten-cent cake.” After their meal, she continues to assist him by saying, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.” By doing this, she literally helps Roger by providing him with a meal and shoes, but she also helps him symbolically by providing him hope for the future when she says, “Behave yourself, boy!” In providing for his needs and caring for him, she has become the symbol of hope, of someone caring enough to believe in Roger when no one is at home to do so. In the end, Mrs. Jones not only taught Roger a life lesson, she made him believe in himself. Without people helping you along the way, life can seem impossible. We need to believe in ourselves and others in order to show them the best that they can be.

31 Begin Drafting! Yesterday, you identified symbols in your novel and supported them with text evidence. Today, you will begin drafting your essays. Begin with your thesis sentence. Then, go back and create a hook and bridge. When you have finished your intro, move on to writing the rest of your draft. Remember to have two quotes in your body paragraph.

37 Chapter 3 Connecting to My Life

38 Thursday, November 3, 2016 CHAMPS Today, I can:
H – RAISE YOUR HAND A – TEACHER LED M- SHARPEN PENCIL/GET MATERIALS P- READING/WRITING S – YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL! Today, I can: Make connections of text to myself by creating a WOW page about my novel.

39 MAKING CONNECTIONS: Text to Self
There are 3 ways to make connections to text. Text to text 2.Text to self Text to world

40 Text to self How do the ideas in this novel relate to your own life, ideas, and experiences? Complete one of the following statements: What I just read reminds me of when I … I agree with/understand what I just read because in my own life… This part is like my life because… This character reminds me of myself because… My feelings when I read this part were…

41 Text to self comparison
Myself Mrs. Luella bates Washington jones Has a big cluttered pocketbook (everything from a hammer to nails) Takes it upon herself to discipline Roger Prepares him a meal Has a conversation with Roger Tries to teach him a lesson Also has a large purse Takes it upon herself to discipline students Prepares lesson for students Has conversations with students Tries to teach them many lessons Text to self connections occur when a book you are reading reminds you of something from your own life

42 “Thank you ma’am” At the beginning of the story: “It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.” My reaction was, “What a creep! I can’t stand thieves! She was walking home from work late at night, and he tried to steal her purse! I have been alone at night, and what if someone tried to grab my purse? How would I react.” Later in the story: “There’s nobody home at my house.” My reaction changed: “What if he was starving and just wanted food? How long has he been at home alone?”

43 Wow chapter A WOW chapter is a chapter in the book that gives you some kind of reaction or feeling. It can be a feeling of what you hoped would happen or remind you of something else.

44 Your turn Choose a chapter/character from the book, Number The Stars, that you can relate to. List ways that you can relate or have something in common with that character, scene, etc. on your WOW page. It needs to be something meaningful – not something insignificant. Make sure you have an example, explain it, and show text evidence. Ex. The chapter about _______ reminds me of when________.

45 Friday, November 4, 2016 Today I can:
CHAMPS C – 0/1 H – RAISE YOUR HAND A - TEACHER LED M – SHARPEN PENCIL/GET MATERIALS P – READING/WRITING S – YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL! Today I can: Brainstorm connections I have with the characters of a novel by explaining those connections and write an introductory paragraph.

46 TEXT TO SELF Yesterday we made a connection with our WOW page. Remember yesterday, when I shared my reaction to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones? In the story, “Thank You Ma’am,” Roger shared that no one was home for him, it reminded me of a student I had that would hesitate to leave and doddle every Friday afternoon at the end of the day. He often times had a look of concern on his face. Come to find out, his reactions each week occurred because he knew he would not have anything to eat until Monday at breakfast. My heart hurt for this young man. I started stocking up peanut butter crackers and such to send home with him on Fridays for him and his sister to eat. I think that Mrs. Jones felt that way about Roger. She knew if no one was home for him, he was probably hungry. “Maybe, you ain’t been to your supper either, late as it be. Have you?”

47 Choose your strongest connection
From your WOW page, determine your strongest connection. Introductory paragraph: Hook – Statement about the topic Bridge – a sentence explaining and elaborating on the hook Thesis – In Paul Fleischman’s novel, Seedfolks, a vague sentence that helps show the connection that you make. Example of Introduction: We’ve all heard of the phrase, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” Sometimes we have to pay attention and look inside to see what’s really going on. In Langston Hughes short story, “Thank You M’am” , the author reveals how an elderly woman discovers the truth about a young man that made a terrible mistake. This reminds me of an event that took place in my own life.

48 Monday, November 7, 2016 CHAMPS C – 0/1 H – RAISE YOUR HAND
A – TEACHER LED M – SHARPEN PENCIL/GET MATERIALS P – READING/WRITING S – You will be successful Today I can: Write a well-constructed body paragraph by including an example, explanation, and two pieces of text evidence to support that example.

49 Text to self connection body paragraphs
Topic: Main idea of the paragraph/What is the connection you made to the chapter/character. Make sure you embed at least TWO pieces of text evidence within your response. Give an example Explain your example Conclusion: restate in different words your connection to the text

50 First Body Paragraph (story) Mrs
First Body Paragraph (story) Mrs. Jones appeared to be a difficult woman when Roger first tried to take her pocketbook. As she talked to the young man, she realized he was a victim of his own circumstances. (text evidence) She asked Roger, “Ain’t you got nobody at home to tell you to wash your face?” (text evidence) When Roger replied with, “No’m,” she realized that Roger faced a difficult situation. (connection to story)This reminds me of a student who would hesitate to leave the classroom every Friday afternoon when the dismissal bell rang. His continuous reluctant behavior caused me to be concerned. After several conversations and building trust, I learned that the food supply in his home was scarce. He would have to wait until Monday mornings at school for his next meal. (Connect back to story) Just like Mrs. Jones, I realized that, due to financial problems in the home, my student struggled as well.

51 Tuesday, November 8, 2016 I can: CHAMPS C – 0/1 H – RAISE YOUR HAND
Write a conclusion paragraph that makes connections from myself to the text by including my topic and call to action. C – 0/1 H – RAISE YOUR HAND A – TEACHER LED M – SHARPEN PENCIL/GET MATERIALS P – READING/WRITING S – You will be successful

52 Conclusion paragraph Sentence 1: Restate your overall topic
Sentence 2: Leave readers something to think about Sentence 3: Call to action Ex. Looking at Mrs. Jones’ actions, I could relate to her concern for Roger. Too many times children make choices or act inappropriately in order to get what they need. Kind hearts, open minds, and guidance can lend a helping hand to needy young people.

53 Wednesday, November 9, 2016 I CAN: champs
