1 Defamation- Slander and Libel
By Grace, MJ and Joe Journalism UAL

2 Defamation This could be in print, broadcast TV or radio, in films or videos, on the internet or during public performances of a play.

3 Of Defamation Model Katie Price and her now ex husband Peter Andre accepted damages from News of the World in 2008 over a story in which their former nanny alleged they were uncaring parents. Journalist Julie Burchill described actor Steven Berkoff as hideous looking and compared him with Frankenstein's monster. They wouldn’t usually class this as defamation but because he made his living as an actor, this made him an object of ridicule. Normally they’d say it doesn’t ruin his reputation.

4 Libel Libel is an imputation which injures a person's reputation by exposing him/her to hatred, contempt or ridicule.

5 Of Libel Boyle wins £54,650 in 'racism' libel case:
Comedian Frankie Boyle, 40, who is known for his controversial humour, said the paper had defamed him with an article published on 19 July 2011 in which The Daily Mirror had libelled him by describing him as "racist". Daily Mirror publisher Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) defended the piece "on the basis of truth and fair comment”. However jurors ruled in favour of Boyle. Jurors had been shown footage from the BBC satirical show Mock The Week, in which Boyle and other comedians discussed immigration Jurors awarded Boyle £50,400 after concluding that the racist description was defamatory.

6 Slander

7 Of Slander Holocaust on Trial:
In 1993, Deborah Lipstadt wrote the book, Denying the Holocaust; to expose lies, distortions, and the politics behind it that drives Holocaust deniers. She had mentioned a number of Holocaust deniers, including David Irvring, who she claims is a "dangerous spokesperson". It was in 1996 that Irving sued Lipstadt and her publisher, saying that they had ruined his reputation as a historian because of what she had wrote. The suit was filed in the UK. The trial started in January 11, 2000 and ended April 11, 2000 when judge Grey made his judgement; Lipstadt had won her case.
