1 Biotech Lab Safety Specifics
Abbrevieations: PPE – Personal protective equipment Should be chosen based on specific risks Glasses with side protection if low splash risk Chemical goggles if large splash risk UV glasses with full face shield if short wave UV is used to view DNA banding Other example: aprons, lab coats, gloves, face masks and shoe covers

2 MSDS – Material Safety Data Sheet
Lists potential hazards associated with the chemicals used in a laboratory

3 Biological Safety Level
BSE 1 – Not a specific threat to handling individual All HS labs and most college labs BSE 2 - Moderate threat to individuals and the environment Some advanced college labs BSE 3 & 4 - pose a threat too great to for use an educational environment The amount of government regulation goes up with each level

4 General Laboratory Hazard Signs
Harmful Explosive Corrosive Dangerous for the environment Flammable Toxic Oxidizing Radioactive Biohazard Poison General danger Electrical hazard

5 Disposal of Biohazardous Material
Autoclave Uses pressure to increase the boiling point of water to 121oC 10% Bleach for countertops Must sit for 10min to be effective Recommended after each biological lab

6 Volumetric Equipment Most Common Graduated Flask Graduated Cylinder
Erlenmeyer Flask Reagent Bottle

7 Pipette Types Volumetric … has graduations
Serologic … has calibrated tip Pasteur (transfer) … made of glass & does not have graduations Used to transfer liquid from one container to another Disposable transfer pipette Standard thin stemmed plastic pipette
