1 Getting Started working with OSY
From a Recruiters Perspective

2 Recruiters are in a Unique Position
If you know how to put an OSY at ease and get them to sign up for the program you are a great candidate to get services started with OSY.

3 Helpful give-away materials
Bandanas- they will do a lot for a bandana Dictionaries- make sure they know how to use it. Reading materials- Scholastic RIF prices allow you to get books and materials at a great price. SD cards loaded with materials to learn English Bilingual guides- there are a lot of free ones. GOSOSY resources SPARK resources

4 Once you sign them up Find out their needs
Have a clear conversation with them letting them know what the program can and cannot do. Don’t promise anything you can’t deliver but begin to build trust.

5 Get to know their individual needs
Find out their needs The OSY Profile is helpful as a way to find out what their beginning interests are. In addition find out what their educational goals are. Maybe they are not sure but let them know the program assists them with those if possible.

Find out their needs If you are not going to be the one providing services let them clearly know who will be working with them. It might be helpful to transition from you to another service provider.

7 Be aware of other resources
Get to know what is out in your community. Can you find partners that you can bring in to help provide services? Are their services provided by a local Adult Ed program for example. Don’t be afraid to be the go between for a bit.

8 “Mini Lessons” Mini lessons will be used to begin to provide services to OSY. This will be a beginning step. No silver bullet for perfect services for all OSY. Services need to be tailored. Designed to get you started providing services to OSY.

9 “Mini Lessons”4-STEP Process
OSY pick a topic from the various ones have available. Provider finds out why the OSY is interested in that topic and then presents the information in conversation form with the OSY. Then you discuss the implications of the information for the OSY.

11 Things to bring or share with Map Mini lesson
It would be helpful to have a map. More than one version would be good. Have the OSY try to show you what roads he would need to take to get from one place to another. Make sure they are understanding the concepts as you teach them. A good teacher always gauges the interest of the student. ELL connection: Practice giving directions. If someone asked how to get somewhere that is relevant with the map provided. Practice different scenarios.

13 Things to bring or share with Dental Health Mini lesson
Ask them if they have ever been to the dentist. Let them know locally of good places to go if they need any dental work done. Provide the hygiene bag to the youth. ELL connection: Practice the vocabulary related to the dental health. Practice how to set up an appointment or talk to a dentist if they had an appointment.

15 Things to bring or share with Heat Illness Mini lesson
Ask them if they have ever experienced heat stroke. Discuss in depth the symptoms and what to do if they feel any of them. If they have not had heat stroke ask them about any other illness they have ever experienced while working. ELL connection: Practice the vocabulary related to going to the doctor. Practice making an appointment. Practice explaining different symptoms to a doctor.

Ask them about other foods or drinks they think might not be good for them. Ask them what they think is good to eat. Share ideas about healthy eating in general ELL connection: Practice vocabulary related to going to a restaurant. Bring a sample menu and have them work to decipher what the menu items are and their costs and how to ask for that item.

19 Things to bring or share with Marijuana Mini lesson
Talk about other types of mind altering substances such as alcohol that can be damaging for them. Let them know the laws in regards to alcohol consumption in the US. Many are not aware of the drinking age for example. ELL connection: Practice vocabulary related to being pulled over by the police or having to call something in that is an emergency to 911.

21 Things to bring or share with HEP Mini lesson
Find out what subjects the OSY liked the most in school. Which ones did he/she really not like. Find out how far they went in school. Learn about their interest in continuing school and explain options that are available locally. ELL connection: Practice vocabulary about calling a local resource such as an Adult Ed class to find out about an ELL Class. Explain about the HiSET or GED and how it works.

23 Things to bring or share with Pesticide Mini lesson
Discuss pesticide use where the OSY works. Ask whether they have ever received any training. ELL connection: Practice farm related vocabulary that would be related to tasks specifically at the place they work.

25 Things to bring or share with Workers Comp Mini lesson
Ask if they have ever seen a case at work of someone they know that might be eligible for workers comp or received the benefits of this after an incident. ELL connection: Practice vocabulary and the steps related to talking to a boss about a situation or circumstance that would be related to workers comp. Discuss vocabulary related to injuries.

27 Things to bring or share with Workers Rights Mini lesson
Ask if they have a recent pay stub that you can look at to explain if they have any questions of something that was taken out of their check. Discuss how to keep up with their hours and pay each week. ELL connection: Discuss vocabulary related to general workers rights.
