For original works of authorship Conferred at fixation upon tangible media (registration is not required) Limited by time and certain uses Inheritable, separable, assignable November 29, 2007 3

What are they? In the US... The right to reproduce the work (to publish, make copies, reformat, etc.) The right to create derivative works (to edit or to build upon an existing piece of scholarship) The right to distribute the work (to publish, republish, give away, sell, etc.) The right to perform the work publicly The right to display the work The right to broadcast the work The right of attribution and integrity November 29, 2007 Science Faculty Colloquy Author Rights 4

5 Inheritable, separable, assignable
Rights held from fixation through the author’s life plus 70 years Each right included may be sold, given away, or granted to another person or body under a non-exclusive license All rights may be given away Subsequent rights holders may assign rights November 29, 2007 Science Faculty Colloquy Author Rights 5

6 When the author assigns copyright
