1 SHERPA/RoMEO Future Features
Peter Millington Centre for Research Communications University of Nottingham SHERPA/RoMEO for Repository Administrators Aston Conference Centre, Birmingham 24th March 2011

2 Outline RoMEO Journals Database Other Developments Questions
Standardisation of phrases and terminology Data enhancements Policy tool for Publishers Questions

3 Journals – Current version of RoMEO
Titles/ISSNs looked up in Zetoc & DOAJ Publisher matched against RoMEO policies Zetoc issues Timeliness of updates Accuracy of publisher attributions Detection & correction of errors Assumes all publishers’ titles have same policy

4 All journals have the same policy

5 Clients may have different policies

6 Some journals are special cases

7 Compiling our own journal database
Journals of publishers listed in RoMEO only Many not covered by Zetoc or DOAJ Harvested directly from publishers’ websites Noting all organisations associated with each title Better assignment of policies Including extra fields ESSN, Alternative titles, etc. Availability of Paid OA, when selective Overcoming Zetoc problems ‘Trust’ order: RoMEO  DOAJ  Zetoc

8 Not as easy as you might think…
Journal listed in two or more sources Are they saying the same thing? Problems equating name variations Out of date data in secondary databases Misattribution of journals to publishers Multiple or joint publishers e.g. Commercial publisher  Society’s journal e.g. “Published by … on behalf of …” Sources often not clear on who controls rights If policies differ, whose take priority?

9 RoMEO Hierarchy of Publisher Types
Examples: Associate Organisation University/Commercial/Governmental Publisher Imprint Client Organisation Copyright Holder Used to determine whose policies take priority Hierarchy refined in the light of experience

10 Changes to the Search Interface
Work in progress Tables of multiple journal results New column for ESSN Display of “Preferred publisher” Indication of “Other parties” where relevant Individual journal results Journal orientated, not publisher orientated Additional data – e.g. journal URLs, ESSNs & notes Lists all parties involved in publication Publisher records New row with data on journals? Lists of a publisher’s journals?

Provisional

32 Release Schedule Interface loose ends
Guidance notes for multiple publishers Aesthetics and usability - Esp. border colour Translation of captions into supported languages Optimisation - Esp. avoiding Zetoc queries End user testing - Volunteers wanted Upgrade of the API Data quality assurance Format & spelling errors ISSN/ESSN errors Eliminating unnecessary data Release Date – April or May?

33 Other Developments Adding prices for Paid OA options
Currently on a separate list Standardisation of terminology Versions Repository types Etc. Standardisation of phrases Publishers’ Policy Tool

34 Publishers’ Policy Tool
Many publishers want guidance on OA policies Building on standardisation & our System Admin Tool Some initial questions (a Wizard?) - e.g. Who owns the copyright? Do you publish under a Creative Commons license? Do you publish open access journals? Recommended initial selections Based on their answers and how liberal they wish to be Then bespoke refinements Interaction with the RoMEO database Adding or updating their entry

35 Any Questions? RoMEO: Prototype: Blog: Peter Millington:
