1 Evaluating a Persuasive Speaker’s Tone:
Orators know that you can not approach all audiences the same…some are friendly…some are hostile; and sometimes you have a mix of the two… The TONE in the speech should speak to both groups. Again…Tone is what????

2 “I confess, that I do not entirely approve of this constitution at present;”
Was this written to persuade a hostile or friendly audience members? Explain. He knows there are people in the audience that are hostile, therefore wants to share his misgivings from the start to catch their attention as well. Now you try….

Explain. “Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, though fear of giving offense, I should consider myself guilty of treason toward my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.” (Patrick Henry) Friendly – he reminds them of values that we all share – a hatred of treason and being disloyal to God’s will.

5 Directing towards a hostile audience, because he knows there are audience members that are not happy with the constitution. But even if they are not happy with the document, he is showing them that approval of the constitution will confound their enemies, who are hoping they will fail….
