1 Opening a World of Opportunity
Work Experience Opening a World of Opportunity Year 10 Work Experience 26th-30th June 2017 Year 12 Work Experience 3rd-7th July2017

2 Why are we doing it? young people are more likely to be successful in their job hunt if they have done some good work experience. Over half of the graduate recruiters that took part in a research study by Highfliers said that, “students who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes."

3 Work Experience allows you to select a placement where you can have experience in the career that you wish to pursue in the future choose a placement where you may want to pursue a career choose a placement where there is a potential of a Saturday job if you are unsure what to do

4 What will it provide? It’s the best way to get an insight of a work environment and how a Business runs. You’ll be able to speak to employees and ask them questions. Networking, and meeting people “in industry” can give you a foot in the door opportunity, and useful contacts for the future

5 Work Experience helps develop communication skills, confidence and develop skills that can be used at school, University and in Business Students to make decisions about your future Career . Universities and Employers look for Work experience on UCAS Progress, UCAS and Job applications.

6 How do students get a placement?
Decide on the industry, explore companies in those areas. Spend time at home considering all the companies in a specific industry. Look at both ‘big’ and ‘small’ companies- they will offer very different experiences. Look on company websites- there’s often a section about Work Experience and who to contact- try and find a named person so you can address them personally by /telephone or a letter. Tell them WHY you want to do work experience with their company. You will work on a cover letter. Use this to plan! Speak to family friends about the opportunity of working with them. Does someone you know know anyone in the industry you want to work in? SPEAK TO PEOPLE!

7 Getting in touch Students should send an from their school address. If a student does not receive an offer, we ask them to send an thanking them for their response and for considering you for a role. Contact them by phone (Mrs. Green can help)

8 Work experience-Summer 2017
Students to find their own placements by Wednesday 4th January 2017! It is preferred that students do not have placements with immediate family Placements should be in the Leeds, Harrogate, Bradford or Wakefield area (but think about travel). It will not be possible to complete work experience outside of these areas! All students finding placements must ask the placement to complete an OP1 form before the deadline. If the placement hasn’t had Work experience Students before they will required to have a Health and Safety check so they need to agree to this. It takes up to 3 months for the Health and Safety checks to be completed. The Employer Liability Insurance details must be completed. No placements will be booked or sent to the Work Experience unit without all details on the form being completed. All Mentors will be informed when students have handed their forms in If students want advice regarding placements Ms Green is in the Careers Office on a Wednesday and Friday and the Main Office on a Thursday

10 What next Once your OP1 has been completed by the employer, you MUST complete the ‘Health and Safety’ form. A meeting to do this must be arranged with the employer. Again, help can be arranged with Mrs. Green.

11 Requirements No work experience may take place for more than 8 hours per day. Most placements will be either 09:00-17:00 or 08:00-16:00. It is possible to negotiate an earlier start (no earlier than 06:00) or a later finish (no later than 23:00). However, these should be exceptions. Students must not operate machinery or vehicles under any circumstances. Students are entitled to a lunchbreak (minimum 30 minutes) and a tea break. Students MUST NOT be paid for their work experience. Work experience MUST NOT be taken with a current employer.

12 I already have part-time work
All students in Y12 are required to complete formal work experience for a minimum of 35 hours as part of their study programme. Part time work does not constitute work experience. Future employers and universities EXPECT students to have work experience. Failure to do this will have a significant impact on ALL applications.

13 On the day Plan travel in advance and ‘live the route’ at least once.
Confirm dress code and ensure these expectations are met. Ensure you have a named contact for when you arrive. Have a clear plan for lunch. Under no circumstances have mobile phones out on duty. Do NOT refer to the company on social media. If you are unhappy with any element of your placement, remain polite and calm and contact school, the school mobile, me or Mrs Green immediately. At the end of the placement, ensure you have a letter written.

14 Attendance Failure to attend is truancy, which will be sanctioned at the highest level. If you are ill, you MUST contact BOTH the employer AND school.

15 Injuries Nobody should be in a position where they are at risk, but accidents happen. If there is an injury, comply with the employer’s standard procedures AND contact school.
