Day 4

Agenda Parking Lot Rich Problem Opening Task: Angle Measures
Debrief – Habits of Mind/That About Covers It Second Task: Pythagorean’s Theorem Third Task: Coffee and Milk Fourth Task: Painting the Gym

Milk

Angle Measures Using the pattern blocks, prove the angle measures of each of the pattern blocks. (You cannot assume that the square has a 90° angle. . .you have to prove it.)

Angle Measures How might you use a mirror to prove angle measures?

Angle Measure Debrief What will students need to know and be able to do before entering this problem? What challenges would your students have with this activity?

Habits of Mind/That About Covers It

Pythagorean’s Theorem

Coffee with Milk A cup containing exactly 8 ounces of coffee is sitting next to a cup containing exactly 8 ounces of milk. A tablespoon of coffee is poured into the milk and stirred thoroughly. Then a tablespoon of the resulting milk and coffee mixture is poured into the coffee and stirred thoroughly. Which is true? There is more milk in the coffee. There is more coffee in the milk. There is the same amount of coffee in the milk as there is milk in the coffee.

Coffee with Milk How can you show this with counters, cubes, or other objects? How can you explain this in words? How can you demonstrate this with an equation of expression?

Painting the Gym A group of students is in charge of choosing a paint color for the walls of the new school gym. They have available large quantities of dark blue paint and large quantities of white paint left over from painting the halls and cafeteria. Four students have mixed small samples of paint to see what color they like best.
