Figure 1 The 3 criteria for judging bowel preparation are interrelated. For example, efficacy is reduced when preparations are poorly tolerated and cannot be fully ingested. Safety is related to direct toxicity of the preparation, but also less efficacious preparations are unsafe because they impair detection during colonoscopy and necessitate early repeat procedures. Poorly tolerated preparations reduce willingness to repeat procedures, which reduces both efficacy and safety with regard to cancer prevention.
