A.C. Vandaele, R. Drummond, A. Mahieux, S. Robert, V. Wilquet SOIR Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (IASB-BIRA) SOIR data workshop

2 Reminders When studying the SOIR spectra, remember Order addition
Influence of the AOTF function Correct the pixel-wavenumber calibration given in the archive (sometimes wrong!) Bins and binning principles Tilting angle of the slit ILP/resolution SOIR data workshop

3 Rotational temperature
The shape of the bands are function of temperature and AOTF function  precision on temperature is subject on the good knowledge of the AOTF function shape!!  induces larger error bars (around 20 K) SOIR was not designed to perform temperature inversions Rotational temperature Density CO2 band in diffraction order 166 SOIR data workshop

4 Use of PDS levels 2 and 3 Level 2 Level 3
Raw data, only corrected for detector non-linearity Can be used for calibration purposes All the data are given if we received them Level 3 Calibrated data Wavenumber scale Transmittance Calibrations data Not all the data is present Only successful occultations (Ingresses and Egresses) that would be handled Nadir, miniscan, fullscan only with wavenumber scale Quality byte SOIR data workshop

5 Overview file The overview file is updated every three months
For the moment, online access to In a near future, you will be able to download it from our website or somewhere there… SOIR data workshop

6 Results of the workshop
Knowledge Working principles Advantages of SOIR Drawbacks of SOIR Calibrations Spectrum construction How to target an occultation If you have more questions in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us! Ann Carine Vandaele (co-P.I.), Arnaud Mahieux (Calib., vertical profiles, archive), Séverine Robert (Spectroscopy), Valérie Wilquet (Aerosols), Rachel Drummond (NOMAD), IASB/BIRA, 3 avenue Circulaire, B-1180 Brussels, Belgium P.I.: Jean-Loup Bertaux, LATMOS, CNRS, France SOIR data workshop

7 Discussion (1) Mission should end in 2014/2015
If you want us to plan measurements In given order(s) At given latitudes/LST  Inform us, we will try to plan them. But we have to know it 3 months in advance (time requested by ESA). We will try to release a new revision of the archive at level 3 before the end of the summer, with Corrected latitude and longitude (DATA) Addition of local solar time (DATA) Addition of the slit tilting angle (DATA) Addition of the instrument sensitivity (CALIB) Addition of the ILP/resolution (CALIB) Addition of the flat field (CALIB) Addition of the signal to noise ratio (CALIB) Others ? SOIR data workshop

8 Discussion (2) End of 2011 – beginning of 2012, release of the PDS level 5 Only for the nominal mission (until orbit ~ 800) Density profiles of CO2 (maybe more species, TBC) Temperature profiles from CO2 Baseline parameters Upon request, we can send you data for targeted species/profiles Comparison with ground based measurements for example We would be very happy to start collaborations with you. Please contact us! SOIR data workshop

9 Discussion (3) If you intend to publish with our data, we would be grateful to be informed, as we spent enormous time calibrating and characterizing the instrument, but also on preparing this workshop. Before publishing, it is important, but not mandatory, to contact the SOIR team Anyway, it is important to acknowledge the PSA and the SOIR team The keywords SPICAV/SOIR and Venus Express or VEX have to be mentioned either in the title or the abstract (or both) We have (almost) no way to compare our results with independent studies: If you intend to develop your own code, with your own approach, we would like to compare our results with yours Tell us if you have comments, remarks, observations concerning our approach, in terms of Calibrations Inversion procedure Targeted species Aerosols SOIR data workshop

10 Special thanks To the ESA team
Dave Heather Maud Barthelemy Olivier Witasse Alex Cardesin Nicolas Manaud Jose Luís Vazquez Patrick Martin Fred Jansen And the VEX project The whole SOIR team from LATMOS, IKI and IASB/BIRA To you, for showing so much interest! Questions, comments? SOIR data workshop
