4 DO NOW: Police broke into a house and found the owner slumped dead in a chair with a bullet hole in his head. On the floor there is a gun and on the table a cassette recorder. When an officer pushed play on the cassette recorder they heard the message "I cannot go on any longer and have decided to commit suicide" followed by the sound of a gunshot. The police immediately started a murder investigation. Why?

11 Simple Definition of ballistics Full Definition of ballistics
: the science that studies the movement of objects (such as bullets or rockets) that are shot or forced to move forward through the air    Full Definition of ballistics 1a :  the science of the motion of projectiles in flight b :  the flight characteristics of a projectile 2a :  the study of the processes within a firearm as it is fired b :  the firing characteristics of a firearm or cartridge

12 Gun card sort Sort your guns in the way that you think they should be sorted. Think of a name/ description for each group of guns. 12 people will share.

Rifles fire bullets Shotguns fire pellets (shot) or a single projectile (slug). Handguns Pistols fire bullets with one hand Revolvers have a cylinder that holds usually six cartridges Automatic and Semi-automatic

29 Chapter 17 Ballistics By the end of this chapter you will be able to:
Explain the differences between a handgun, a rifle, and a shotgun Describe rifling on a gun barrel and how it affects the flight of the projectile Explain barrel size and caliber All Rights Reserved South-Western / Cengage Learning © 2012, 2009 Forensic Science: Fundamentals & Investigations, Chapter 17

30 Introduction Ballistic evidence helps explain:
What type of firearm was used The caliber of the bullet The number of bullets fired Where the shooter was located Whether a weapon was fired recently If a firearm was used in previous crimes

31 History of Gunpowder and Firearms
Chinese invented gunpowder over a thousand years ago Muzzle-loading matchlocks used wicks to ignite the gunpowder Cartridge and breech loading Revolver, semi-automatic, and automatic handguns

32 How a Firearm Works The firing pin hits the base of the cartridge, igniting the primer powder The primer powder sparks through the flash hole to the main propellant supply

33 How a Firearm Works The pressure of the explosion pushes the bullet from the casing into the barrel The bullet follows the lands and grooves spiraling out of the barrel

34 Long Guns and Handguns Long guns Handguns Automatic and Semi-automatic
Rifles fire bullets Shotguns fire pellets (shot) or a single projectile (slug). Handguns Pistols fire bullets with one hand Revolvers have a cylinder that holds usually six cartridges Automatic and Semi-automatic

35 Firearms and Rifling Grooves and ridges (lands) in the barrel of a gun produce the twisting that adds accuracy This leaves a pattern on the bullet that is unique (individual evidence!)

36 Bullets, Cartridges, and Calibers
Cartridge—a case that holds a bullet, primer powder, and gunpowder The bullet, usually of metal, is out front with the cartridge, holding the primer and propellant powders, behind.

37 Marks on the Spent Cartridge Casings
Firing pin marks appear on the rim or center of the spent cartridge can be used to match a cartridge to a firearm Breechblock marks produced when the cartridge casing slams backward and strikes the breechblock Extractor marks Ejector marks

38

39

40 Caliber of the Cartridge
Caliber—a measure of the diameter of the cartridge In hundredths of an inch OR thousandths of an inch OR millimeters. Why should the caliber of ammunition match the firearm that shoots it? If they do not match, what could go wrong?

41 The Study of Bullets and Cartridge Casings
How is each fired bullet marked? What is the procedure to match a spent bullet to the firearm that shot it? What makes up a test-firing, and why is it done? Forensic Science: Fundamentals & Investigations, Chapter 17

42 FORMATIVE BLOG POST Take a picture of your ammunition lined up next to your chart. Post the picture on your blog. Write 2-3 sentences explaining the most important ideas you learned today. ** You can include a link to your learning partners’ blog if you want.
