1 Tenure Procedure Northwest Vista College
Workshop Updated September 2015

2 Tenure Procedure D.2.5.5 Intended to provide a definite structure for the tenure review process. Assist tenure-track (probationary) faculty members in developing characteristics requisite to earn tenured status.

3 Evaluation of Professional Performance
For faculty members seeking tenure status, the evaluation process shall include evaluation by the Chair or Supervisor, a response to the values of NVC, student evaluation, peer evaluation, and self-evaluation.

4 Tenure Procedure Years I-V
First year of employment is probationary for all faculty members. Faculty member will complete all evaluation requirements as outlined in D.7.1.2

5 Tenure Procedure Years I-V
Evaluation Tool Full-time Non-Tenured Faculty Student Evaluations Every Semester (All Classes) Classroom Observations Each Fall Semester Peer Review Evaluation Each Spring Semester Faculty Self Evaluation Faculty Evaluation by Chairperson Each Spring Semester (after peer review and faculty self-evaluation are complete)

6 Tenure Procedures Years I-V
Faculty member will have a personal interview/review with Chair or Supervisor concerning the Annual Report: Self-evaluation and response to the NVC values. Chair or Supervisor shall indicate if the faculty member is making progress toward tenure. Measures needed to enhance progress toward tenure will be defined.

7 Tenure Procedures Years I-V
The Dean, VPAS, and President will annually review and contribute in the evaluation of all faculty and will determine those to be reviewed and recommended for non-renewal to the Chancellor Faculty member must be notified, in writing, by March 31 if non-renewal of appointment will be made for the following year.

8 Tenure Procedures Years VI
Faculty member will complete all evaluation requirements as outlined in D.7.1.2 The Annual Report: Self-evaluation will include a response to the NVC values. Faculty member may not apply for promotion in the same year as applying for tenure

9 Faculty Responsibility Year VI
Date Action September 8 Faculty member sends letter of intention to apply for tenure to chair/supervisor November 2 Faculty member submits electronic dossier to chair/supervisor December 8 After chair/supervisor reviews dossier, faculty member corrects any omissions and resubmits dossier

10 Faculty Responsibility Year VI
The dossier should include: Performance evaluations by Chair or Supervisor, student evaluations, and peer review summaries Annual Report: Self-evaluation (including a response to the NVC values where appropriate). An up-to-date resume Other materials the faculty member deems relevant.

11 Chair/Supervisor Responsibility
Date Action November 20 Chair/Supervisor reviews dossier and notifies faculty member of any omissions January 8 Chair/Supervisor submits dossier to tenure committee February 5 Chair/Supervisor forwards dossier and recommendation to Dean/VPAS and notifies the candidate in writing as to the recommendation being forwarded

12 Tenure Committee Responsibility
Date Action September 17 Tenure committee is selected by faculty and approved by Dean/VPAS/President January 9 Tenure committee receives faculty tenure dossier January 25 Tenure committee forwards dossier and recommendation to the chair/supervisor

13 Tenure Committee Chair or Supervisor shall not be a member of this committee. This committee may be the same as the Promotion Committee. The Tenure Committee will review each eligible faculty member’s qualifications.

14 Tenure Committee Faculty members being considered for tenure may not serve on the committee. Small academic areas may recruit committee members from the full-time tenured and tenure track faculty of other areas. If someone from another area participates, there should be mutual agreement of faculty and Chairs or Supervisor.

15 What happens next? Date Action February 16
Dean forwards dossier and recommendation to VPAS and notifies candidate March 1 VPAS forwards dossier and recommendation to President and notifies candidate March 21 President submits tenure list with recommended actions to Chancellor through Human resources and notifies candidate May 10 Board Action on Tenure Recommendations May 24 Notification to all Tenure candidates of board action
