3 Reaction to World War I Most of a generation of young people were either killed or maimed during WWI. Those left alive carried scars both physical and emotional This caused rapid change in Europe and America A backlash against the old order began People began to question everything they thought they knew

4 The Jazz Age It was a period of time in the mid 1920’s named after a new type of music; Jazz. This music combines Western harmonies with African rhythm Young people disillusioned by war, rejected the rules & morals of their parents and embraced the Jazz Age.

5 The Postwar Woman Jazz Age women where known as Flappers
They were liberated and risqué Women also gained the right to vote and were allowed to work outside the home They had proven their equality during the war Some were elected to public office Others competed in professional sports Most professions were still dominated by men Wages were no where near equal

7 New Literature Many postwar writers like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about the moral breakdown of Western Civilization They became known as the “Lost Generation” They reflected the disillusionment seen after WWI The Harlem Renaissance marked an African American cultural awakening African American writers and artists explored their culture and experience in America Laid the foundation for the civil rights movement

9 New Science Marie Curie discovered that the atoms of certain elements are radioactive Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity which leads to the atomic bomb Alexander Fleming discovers a nontoxic mold that kills bacteria; penicillin World’s 1st Antibiotic Sigmund Freud developed Psychology The study of the human mind and behavior He believed our subconscious influenced our decisions

10 Modern Art Many new styles of art came out the disillusionment of WWI
Artists rejected traditional styles Cubism: 3-D objects broken down into fragmented parts Abstract: Pictures composed of only lines, colors, and, shapes with no real subject Surrealism: Attempts to portray the workings of the unconscious mind
