Smile Multiplication is the Big Maths name for multiplying by multiples of 10.
It is a critical building block for multiplication.
It is so called because of the smiley face that the children draw as they frst aply the skills of multiplying by multiples of 10.
There are three fool-proof steps to follow:
Remember to do the tables bit
Remember to count the zeros in the question
Remember to put the zeros on your answer.

This is similar to the Adding with Pim, as soon as we learn that 3 lots of 4 things are 12 things, then we can swap the ‘thing’ for tens.
So, 3 lots of 4 tens are always 12 tens.
The smile shows the times table fact we should already know.
3 x 40 = 120

3. Coin Multiplication
This uses the known times tables facts to find the answers to bigger numbers – the same as coin values. x5

This uses the known times tables facts to find the answers to bigger numbers – the same as coin values. x5 1p 2p 5p

We can find these first as they are already known facts from the ‘Learn Its’
We can then use the 2nd fact to find the 20th.
And the 5th fact to find the 50th.
It is all linked to 3 skills the children can already do:-

5. Coin Multiplication
This uses the known times tables facts to find the answers to bigger numbers – the same as coin values. x5

So, 2 digit multiplication becomes easier using the facts we already know.
