Aim: how do we review our best practices in writing a part 3 response?

The play of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the playwright effectively uses writing strategies to express the idea that one can leave physically but still feel trapped emotionally. Specifically, diction is the writing strategy which best conveys the idea of being trapped. The incorporation of diction helps the author to illustrate the theme of one leaving physically but still feeling trapped emotionally by connecting expression and words. For instance, some of the words used in page 68 are motion, traveled and faithful. These three diction are all connected to clarify the theme of one leave physically but still feel trapped emotionally, because they illustrate how the main character in the play left his reality and start leaving his fantasy, but he was still trapped, because his feel of guilt will never let him be escape. To get back to the point, the use of diction was a perfect writing strategy to make this theme more clear. All in all, the writing strategy of diction made easier for the author to illustrate the theme of someone leaving physically but still feel trapped emotionally. This shows that even thought that person leave the place they still think about it mentally.

Tennessee Williams make a big deal out of telling us all about the apartment. He wants us to know how the buildings are all stacked up like a beehive, so we get the exact sense that he has. The narrator is an older Tom, some years after the scenes that are played out. He defines the way in which the play is presented here as a “memory scene.” The tone of this play is the product of its narrator. Because Tom tells us about the play by looking back from a rather sad state. “Tom appears at the top of the alley.” One obvious writing strategy that can be seen all over the story is characterization. An example is on page nineteen when Jim calls Laura, “Blue Roses” and when we think about it Laura is as soft and breakable as a flower and she is as rare as a blue rose. The whole ideas of the story is what kind of problems the characters are facing and how they want to get rid of them but they can’t.

In the play from the glass menagerie by tennessee williams the author uses many different techniques and elements to make clear reality vs. illusion. One of the elements the narrator used to clarify the theme reality vs illusion was conflict of man vs himself. Man vs himself convey the theme of how tom is fire-escape, by showing that tom escape from his life by immersing himself into the cinemas. The conflict of man vs himself help us understand the theme how tom is fire escape, by showing that tom escape from his life by immersing himself into the cinemas. Based on the text it states on page 67 “you don’t know things anywhere! You live in a dream, you manufacture illusions!” Which means that tom live in a dream full of illusions. It also reveal that he escape from reality by going to the movies. According to the text on page 68 also says “I descended these steps of this fire escape for the last time and followed from then on in my father’s footsteps, attempting to find in motion what was lost in space.” Meaning that tom followed these steps from his father to find out the things that were lost in distance. So he descends into the depths of alcoholism and the movies. In conclusion, according that tom fire escape from reality by immersing himself in the cinemas and that he followed these steps of this life from his father to escape from reality. For instance, when tom says the cities swept about me like dead leaves that were brightly colored by torn away from the branches. Finally this is how the author connect the central ideas with the writing strategy.

One of the most famous plays in modern theater, The Glass Menagerie, is written by Tennessee Williams from which the playwright effectively used many writing strategies to develop the large idea that one who immerses himself in the beauty of illusion has to face an ugly reality sometimes. Specifically, to illustrate the comparison between illusion and reality, symbol is utilized as an important writing strategy. And different symbols help express the central idea and build the image of characters. There are widely-used symbols in the play that stand for the main characters, Laura and Tom. First of all, the key and clue that goes through the whole play is the glass menagerie. As stated on the page 24, “With an outraged groan Tom tears the coat off… It strikes against the shelf of Laura’s glass collection. Laura cries out as if wounded,” it should be easily found out that when Tom and Amanda have a big conflict and fight, Laura’s glass menagerie is the thing that is broken. This consequence represents Laura actually, who is the one that really gets hurt. [Meanwhile, beautiful glass menagerie is so fragile and weak that can be broken easily. So is Laura, the beautiful look outside but delicate inside.] The glass menagerie shares so many similarities with herself. When facing with it, Laura falls deeply in her illusion world and is too satisfied to wake up. However, when the fight between Tom and Amanda breaks her glass menagerie, Laura’s beautiful illusion has been destroyed in a sense, and of course, Laura gets so sad. Without her glass menagerie anymore, Laura has to face her ugly reality that she is not only cripple and unconfident, but also mentally weak and immature. By using the glass menagerie, Laura’s beautiful illusion and ugly reality are presented. Another symbol that is utilized is the fire escape, mainly connected to Tom. Fire escape is always in the setting of this play that stands for the idea of escape from reality. At the end of the play, page 68, Tom’s monologue “I descended these steps of this fire escape for the last time… attempting to find in motion that was lost in space” the author clarifies the escape of Tom by telling his action led by the fire escape. Tom is always in entrapment in his depressing family, the annoying mother Amanda, the unmarried, fragile sisters who is crippled, so that the reality is definitely ugly. More than that, to raise his family, he is forced to get a job that is simply boring and gives up his dream job to become a creative writer. And fortunately, in this case, the fire escape is then a symbol for him that reminds him of the beauty of illusion. So he escapes to chase for the fading beauty. However, there is no doubt that he is still trapped and has to wake up to face the ugly reality. The symbolism of fire escape clearly expresses the idea of escaping from the ugly reality, but still has to face it. The beauty of illusion can’t make any change of life. As all have been stated, symbolism is used as the writing strategy that best conveys the central idea of the play. The glass menagerie and the fire escape held build the connection between the beautiful illusion and ugly reality, which provide readers with the importance of working up and be strong and brave enough to face the reality no matter how ugly it might be.

In the play from Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie, the playwright uses many writing strategies to clarify the theme of leaving is not being escape. Specifically, the playwright uses the conflict of man vs himself to make this theme more clear. Therefore, the incorporation of man vs. himself allows the playwright to illustrate this theme by showing that when the main character of the play left his reality, he didn’t escape at all. The theme of leaving is not being escape helps to understand the conflict of a man against himself, thinking that leaving is the only way out to escape of his reality. For instance, in page 48 the playwright states “Tom: I’m tired of the movies” “I’m not patient… I don’t want to wait till then. I’m tired of the movies and I’m about to move.” The purpose of the following is to show, that in order for this character to stop watching movies and start moving. It is necessary to leave the reality and move on to the fantasy. In other words, leaving his reality of taking care of others, is the only way to escape and start living his own movie. However, in page 68, the author states “Then all at once… my sister touches my shoulder. I turn around and look into her eyes…. Oh Laura, Laura I tried to leave you behind me, but I’m more faithful than I intended to be.” This helps to establish the theme of leaving is not being escape, by demonstrating that even though he left his reality, and his dreams of moving came true, his feels of guilt make him feel regret. So he left his reality, but he did not escape of it. As can be seen, the conflict of man vs. himself clearly established the difference between leave and escape. Overall, the inclusion of man vs. himself made it easier to understand the theme of leaving is not being escape, because it clearly showed the difference between leave and escape. In addition, when the main characters of the play left and started traveling and living his illusion or fantasy, he didn’t escape, since his feeling of guilt were making him to regret.

In the monologue from Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, the playwright uses many writing strategies to clearify the thme of leaving not always being escape. Specifically, the playwright effectively use diction to convey the central idea. The writer utilizes words, “moon,” “farther” and “distance” to portray the central idea. Diction is the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing’s specific word choice. For example, in the monologue “I didn’t go to the moon. I went much farther. For time is the longest distance between two places…” This example indicates that Tom wants to leave his family and give up his responsibilities. The words like “moon,” “farther” and “distance” show that Tom wants to go farther and farther. He wants to go to the moon. However, Tom’s leaving is not escaping. Tom doesn’t want to be his father who left his father completely. These words “moon,” “farther” and “distance” portray the central idea of leaving not always being escape. In conclusion, in the monologue, the writer uterlize diction to clearify the central idea of leaving not always being escape. These words “moon,” “farther” and “distance” specifically support the central idea.

In the play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the playwright uses many writing strategies to clarify the theme “Reality vs. Illusion.” Specifically, the playwright uses the element of irony to convey the central idea. The incorporation of irony allows the playwright to gives more details about the theme. One of the biggest example of irony that the playwright uses starts at page 48 when tom tells jim about what he was planning. Tom tells Jim that he will “move” but he is trying to move without hurt laura or Amanda. However, the fact is that tom left at the wrong time for laura and Amanda. Another example of irony is a page 54 through 64, in this part of the play Jim is talking with Laura. He was king of trying to get in love with laura. However at page 64, Jim kisses laura, then, Jim said “Gee, I shouldn’t have done that.” Later, the irony take place. Jim tells laura that he is going to get married. by using this element the playwright is able to give a completely different idea that contribute with the theme reality vs illusion. In conclusion, writing strategies and elements helps the playwright to create different ideas that work together to show the theme. Also, elements allow the playwright to give more details about the theme.

In the book by Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie the writer uses Tom a character to illustrate a central idea. Williams uses characterization to support the central idea. In The Glass Menagerie Tom wants to leave his house, because his mom is always stressing him even though he pays all the bills. This is why he wants to escape but feels bad for his mom and sister. Tom is more like the man of the house. Even though Tom is the youngest he pays all the bills and takes care of his mom and sister. In The Glass Menagerie illustrates Tom wanting to leave. For example “In the scene of Tom being the narrator it is repeated he is standing next to a fire escape to show the audience he wants to escape and live life. Another example is Tom joining the Merchant Marines. The books states that he signs the papers to leave. Tom really wants to leave his home and live life. To is the youngest in the house and pays all the bills. When Tom gets home he just hears his mom stress him out. Tom really wants to leave he’s always standing next to a fire escape. Tom also signs to join the Merchant Marines. At last Tom does end up leaving his house and, goes the Merchant Marines, to live life.
