1 Warm-up: Simplify. (y5 + 32)(y + 2)-1 2.
January13, 2012 At the end of today, you will be able to simplify radical expressions. Warm-up: Simplify. (y5 + 32)(y + 2)-1 2. QUIZ Friday 1/20 Sections 5.6, 5.7 HW 5.6b: PG. 254 #29-32, 37-40, 43, 45

2 Correct HW 5.6a

3 Lesson 5.6b Simplifying Radicals Like Radical Expressions You can add and subtract radicals if they have the same number under the radical. For example: Example 1: Simplify. First, simplify the radicals to get like radicals.

4 Multiplying Radicals Simplify, then multiply, then simplify again if needed. Example 2: A radical multiplied to itself cancels the the radical.

5 Practice Time! Simplify to its simplest form. 1. 2. 3.
*use FOIL/ Distributive Prop *These are called conjugates

6 Dividing Radicals Rationalizing the Denominator
NO Radicals in the Denominator! Example 3: Simplify Rationalize it, Yo! A radical multiplied to itself cancels the the radical. Rationalizing the denominator means you are multiplying the same radicand to get rid of the radical in the denominator. Simplify

7 PRACTICE RATIONALIZING
2. 3. *Use the conjugate to rationalize
