3 How Primo Central works How Alternative Coverage works
Goals & Objectives What Primo Central is How Primo Central works How Alternative Coverage works At the end of this session, you will know the basics of What Primo Central is How Primo Central works

4 Agenda Introduction Concept Processes Activation Front End
Alternative Coverage Demo Resources Welcome to Primo View (User Interface/Front End) Configuration For the next two hours you will learn how to customize the Primo User Interface. This class will focus on the UI only, during the Advanced Publishing Platform course you will learn how to use normalization rules to modify how data displays.

5 What is Primo Central Data Providers Primo Central Scholarly Material
The Primo Central mega-aggregate of scholarly material in a cloud environment provides easy access to hundreds of millions of scholarly materials obtained from primary and secondary publishers and aggregators. Results are delivered in one blended, relevance-ranked Primo list. Data Providers Primo Central Primarily articles, reviews and e‐books – but also conference proceedings, newspaper articles and more. Blended results list can be intermixed with Primo Central scholarly materials with local results and deliver to users all the items they might need for research Scholarly Material

6 In Numbers 600,000,000 millions items

7 Primo and Primo Central
Primo provides libraries with a single, unified discovery layer giving users access to all resources regardless of type or location. Primo is using Primo Central as a resource for electronic and digital scholarly materials. Primo Central Primo Primo is the software – used to present information. Primo Central – additional data service for Primo – like ILS or repository Digital Repository ILS

8 Primo Terminology – PRIMO DATA SOURCE
Local Primo (loaded) Remote Primo Full control: No control: Norm Rules Normalization Rules Some control: View View Integrated Library System Primo Central Consortium Partners You probably have many different types of resources and materials, and you get these resources from a variety of sources. A Primo data source is the repository where your item records are stored. These records can be in your ILS (click), your digital repositories (click) and they can even be citations that link to your electronic resources. (click) ContentDM Luna

9 Agenda Introduction Concept Processes Activation Front End
Alternative Coverage Demo Resources Welcome to Primo View (User Interface/Front End) Configuration For the next two hours you will learn how to customize the Primo User Interface. This class will focus on the UI only, during the Advanced Publishing Platform course you will learn how to use normalization rules to modify how data displays.

10 Concept – Three Main Components
The data itself Hundreds of thousands of indexed journals Hundreds of millions of records Your scope of that data As defined through the Primo Central Index Activation system Your online holdings of that scope As defined by your link resolver holdings file (SFX, Uresolver or other) Indicated by full text availability First, data itself Afterwards, scope of the data – you chose to activate – that you enabled users to discover Third – your licensed resources through SFX or Uresolver within the holdings files Next slide

11 Based on the Primo platform (it is the same software)
Concept Primo Central is a centralized Primo index that encompasses hundreds of millions of records Harvested from publishers and aggregators of global or regional significance Offered as a service to all Primo and MetaLib customers at the institutional level Based on the Primo platform (it is the same software) Number of records is constantly growing as additional collections are added Hosted and maintained by Ex Libris in a cloud computing environment (SaaS) We work with data providers Same platform as Primo itself – same technology Monthly updates showing which new providers have added data

12 Web-Service interface
Concept Local Primo Client Local Content Primo Central Primo Primo Central Web-Service interface IP based Primo is the central software used by the searcher to blend all the sources into a single result. It is ordered by relevancy.

13 Agenda Introduction Concept Processes Activation Front End
Alternative Coverage Demo Resources Welcome to Primo View (User Interface/Front End) Configuration For the next two hours you will learn how to customize the Primo User Interface. This class will focus on the UI only, during the Advanced Publishing Platform course you will learn how to use normalization rules to modify how data displays.

14 Process One –the data itself
Weekly harvest for updates to materials Monthly harvest for new materials Automated harvests feed to Primo Central pipes Pipes begin Sunday; accessible Tuesday or Wednesday Data Providers Primo Central Who are Providers? (Give some examples but not all) Primary publishers: Springer, Wiley, Elsevier, Oxford University Press, IOP Publishing, S. Karger, ABC-CLIO, IEEE Aggregators: Gale, Lexis Nexis, Publishing Technology (IngentaConnect), JSTOR, CredoReference, Knovel, CrossRef E-books vendors: Dawson, Ebook Library, Ebrary, Ingram Digital, HathiTrust Providers of A&I databases: Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), Medline, ERIC, Modern Language Association (MLA) Providers of open-access content: HathiTrust, ArXiv, PLoS, PubMedCentral, Medline/PubMed, DOAJ Providers of regional content: Chongqing VIP Information (China); Nurimedia (Korea); RMIT/Informit (Australia), Ciando GmbH (Germany); Casalini Libri (Italy); HiperLink (Turkey) Scholarly Material

15 Process Two – your scope/institutional holdings
Site updates SFX/Alma holdings Weekly export of Institutional Holdings File Affects Availability status 1st load - Takes between 4 and 14 days to appear Automated harvests feed to Primo Central pipes Primo Central Primo Institutions What gets automatically updated in Primo Central for your site? SFX or Alma implementation created an institutional holding file and export as part of the project. As part of Primo project, that file was linked to Primo central and added to the harvesting program. There is a third process – Activation – to talk about with Primo Central – before the front end will work as we need it to. Institutional Holdings File Link Resolver

16 PCI Cycle in Primo Thursday: Harvest from Vendors (journal updates) & Sites (institutional holdings files) New Collections Monthly Hotswap Update Existing Vendor Data Sunday Monday/Tues Availability Weekly Holdings Updates This is the cycle you fit into with the institutional holdings file updates. With the Update Existing Data, you data is harvested. This usually occurs starting on Thursday. Weekly updates begin Sunday. Indexing/Availability change and Hotswap are usually complete by Wednesday morning. Indexing

17 Monthly Cycle – What’s in it for me?
Monthly Primo Central Newsletter ed to person listed in “profile” for SFX/Uresolver Lists new resources / removed resources SFX/Alma changes Primo Central activations must be updated by the site Based on newsletter contents and site’s SFX/Alma/Link Resolver changes Signing publishers – ongoing; up to date and quality are important – following standards – scalable – want it to continue to handle large volume of data over time Unique data – adding institutional repositories End his Data quality and keeping up to date data are the harder pieces as these are outside of our control and we can always use your help. As you search in Primo, you are likely to find broken links. Some of the links vary between providers. Some, the link in Primo Central is different than the provider. Report those not only to us but also to the provider as the source data is from the provider. This way, research is conducted from both sides. Hopefully, issues are resolved more quickly using this ‘dual’ reporting method.

18 Agenda Introduction Concept Processes Activation Front End
Alternative Coverage Demo Resources Welcome to Primo View (User Interface/Front End) Configuration For the next two hours you will learn how to customize the Primo User Interface. This class will focus on the UI only, during the Advanced Publishing Platform course you will learn how to use normalization rules to modify how data displays.

19 Activation Primo Central Wizard Activate your subscriptions
Activate free resources Informs Primo of titles owned/subscribed to in the world of available vendor resources SFX/Alma/Link Resolver List thresholds / ranges of holdings for titles owned Generates institutional holdings files Send to Primo Central weekly Provides Availability for Primo Central activations All sites will activate titles in Primo central. HOW you activate them will depend on whether you are a total care site and are given a URL to the wizard or are a direct site and given access to the Primo back office. How SFX is updates is outside the scope of this session except to mention that any additions or deletions made to SFX may cause changes to your Primo Central settings. Please work with your institutions SFX team to determine an appropriate work flow to update Primo Central activations.

20 Process Three –Your Scope of the Data
Weekly harvest for updates to your scope Allows Primo Central results to appear in Primo Updates appear in 4 to 7 days Automated harvests feed to Primo Central pipes Primo Central Activation Wizard Allows all customers to activate Primo Central independently URL available for TotalCare Simplifies registration process for customers for both initial and ongoing activations Saves and manages customer’s information address for monthly resource updates TotalCare customers are given an http address. Direct and local customers update through the Primo back office. It is up to each site to Activate each new resource licensed. Likewise, a site must de-active or modify resources no longer licensed. Go to next slide

21 Activations Edit the Primo Central entry for your institution
From Activation Wizard URL provided by Support (TotalCare sites) OR From the back office – Ongoing – Institution record – My Profile (Direct/Local sites) Edit the Primo Central entry for your institution My Client Applications the Primo Central area on the doc center has a Technical Documentation area which contains the Configuration Guide for Primo Central Next slide

22 Activations Locate your institution name Look for the PRIMO entry

23 Activations Then Edit client resource collection
On the resources list, use Filter By to help limit providers Click the + by a provider name to check the box to activate Show in demo DEMO Show a PCI list – show drop-down with types of resources – open access; vs licensed vs restricted search and restricted delivery Simple decide which should be available for your user Go to DataCite – free to use can activate all resources – under each can see details On other side of scale – Thomson Reuters – click – only institutions that subscribe should activate it. Next slide

24 Activations Click the + by a provider name to view details
Under Show Info, availability details are provided. This example has Fixed availability of ‘Full text’ available Please note the Show Info link. It is under this link you will find information on the availability setting for this resource. We will talk more of this setting in a bit. Next slide

25 Activations – for consortia
Consortia can now activate their Primo Central resources via one central Primo institution for all their members. members inherit central resources members can activate local resources member institutions must belong to the same Primo customer code as the central office.   Consortium update -Consortia can now activate their Primo Central resources via one central Primo institution for all their members.

26 Activation –for consortia
Default settings vary according to the order of creation:   Institutions registered after the central office will inherit its activations by default Institutions registered before the central office institution has been created will not inherit its activations by default Inheritance can be turned on and off by the individual institutions. Consortium update -Consortia can now activate their Primo Central resources via one central Primo institution for all their members.

27 Activation wizard – last reminders
Direct/Local - Activate/Deactivate entries in ‘my profile’ TotalCare – will receive http address PC addresses for firewall access – Please open to these IP access: verify That the follow IP addresses are allowed to retrieve the holdings file from the link resolver server on http port 80. If you use SFX, add the IP addresses to config/get_file_restriction.config If you have firewalls on the link resolver server include SFX or Alma, make sure the firewall includes the IP addresses. There are separate session on SFX and Metalib so I will stop here with those. Your Primo or Alma team will do your initial setup of the PCKEY. They should give you access to the activation wizard fairly quickly after your kickoff meeting for both the Primo and Alma projects. SFX and Uresolver have separate PCKEYs. You have to redo the activation wizard with Alma. If you are an SFX customer moving to Alma and have not been given access to your new PCKey for activations, please ask your project manager for the new key. If they ask ‘who said’, send them to me Donna Smith and I will explain. Once you have your http address for activations, it Is a matter of logging in and checking a box for your subscription resources. You will receive additional instruction at that time.

28 Agenda Introduction Concept Processes Activation Front End
Alternative Coverage Demo Resources Welcome to Primo View (User Interface/Front End) Configuration For the next two hours you will learn how to customize the Primo User Interface. This class will focus on the UI only, during the Advanced Publishing Platform course you will learn how to use normalization rules to modify how data displays.

29 Front End Search Default Primo Central search decision options:
Results limited to Full Text activated items Results show all activated items Brief demo – point out facets – details tab – view online, more expand or refine Implementation DECISION Terminology warning: beyond library collections Suggest this be renamed. This area of facets is specific to Primo Central. Expand is beyond licensed fulltext only Primo Central article content to all activated licensed and non-restricted unlicensed for searching no-fulltext, fulltext, abstracts and citations content. Revised based on previous slide. To look beyond my collection, I can expand my results to look at non-full text and non-licensed primo central entries. However, it does still limit to showing activated resources. Would use ‘more’ tab to show services/links to ILL type services or instructions. In Alma, this is the ‘get it’ tab.

30 Expand Beyond “Library Collections”
Brief demo – point out facets – details tab – view online, more expand or refine Implementation DECISION Terminology warning: beyond library collections Suggest this be renamed. ‘Expand beyond library collections’ is really ‘Expand beyond full-text activated resources in Primo Central to all activated resources’

31 SFX-PrimoCentral-Primo Interoperability
Included in Search Results because a Primo Central Collection containing this citation is Active Included because the listed Targets offering this title (Nature) are Active in SFX Let’s look at how this all fits together using a result in Primo & where each piece comes into play in a Primo record. 1.) The fact there is a result displaying means it’s activated in Primo Central. This goes back to the Primo Central Activation we saw on the previous slide. 2.) The fact that “full text” links are available in the View Online tab means the target & full-text target service & object is activated in SFX. This refers back to SFX Activations that we talked about in the SFX Data Management session. 3.) The Full-Text available means the holdings file exists (with a positive holdings response), 2011 is inside the coverage range, and the RSI indexing has run in the background. (This refers back to the Primo Central Indexing availability process) This is one way you can troubleshoot – determining whether the issue might be SFX related or Primo Central related. INTERNAL NOTE: Hotswap: swaps old index for the new index – so doesn’t interfere with searching during the indexing process… “only after Primo Central weekly process is run.” Generated from the Google-Scholar-format coverage (holdings) file exported from SFX (updated weekly in Primo Central)

32 Primo Central Display - Main Features
Data standards (Source, Links, is part of) listed on the Details tab required by providers – (see PCI Service Config & Display Guidelines) Collection facet Pre-filter availability facet Author facet Snippets Peer review indication Grouping Primo Central is a data source used in Primo just like your local catalog is a data source. However, PCI’s contents are set and predefined so searching and display options do differ between local Primo collections and Primo Central. Where you can customize the local MARC tags indexed or displayed for your cataloged, you cannot customize Primo Central’s indexes or display values. Main features of Primo Central are listed here. Some are discussed on next slides. Data Standards –Source – publisher, aggregator or vendor. It, links and ‘is part of’ should be displayed in Primo. Collection facet – would list an aggregator collection such as Business Premier or OneFile Peer review & availability –next slides Snippets will show a small portion of article with in=context search result in brief results display – set in View – Tiles – Brief display Next slide

33 Terms of Service and Guidelines
BEFORE YOU START If you plan to copy/paste information from here, please review the Terms of use and Guidelines. Both documents are very important for use with Primo Central. 4 types of restrictions on search collections. Please refer to the Terms of Service for PCI. These can be found on the Doc Center or in your contract. I have included the name of the manual in the resources section. It reminds you of restrictions for searching and delivery of information, fields that must be displayed and other information DEMO - Show where it is on doc center. Or more demo if needed Next slide

34 Checks if article belongs to Peer Review Journal
Peer Review Process Checks if article belongs to Peer Review Journal Assigns each matched record with Peer Review indication Facet of Peer Review is created during indexing process Used as part of the relevancy ranking Two levels of peer review – Journal peer review – determined by publisher at the journal level Article peer review – This is determined by the link resolver product based on the journal This provides us with additional clues as to how we might better conduct research. Also contributes to relevancy ranking. (discussed in a future essentials presentation)

35 Groupings There are 7 records in 3 entries. Why not 1 group? Amy Maxmen, Nature, 10 February 2011, A can of worms

36 Groupings are created based on citations
Groupings - FAQ Groupings are created based on citations Significant differences in citations causes different groups (Title in this case) #1 - A can of worms: an obscure group of tiny creatures takes centre stage in a battle to work out the tree of life #2 – Evolution: A can of worms #3 – A can of worms Why are there groups of 1? Other entries are for sources not activated by you Why are there duplicate records in Primo Central? they are from the same provider likely from different collections checked in the PNX record (&showPnx=true)

37 Availability & Delivery Concept
Availability & delivery defined on the institutional level Both assume the resource has been ‘activated’ in Primo Central. Delivery status is based mostly on the customer link resolver system There are 3 different combinations to determine best availability & delivery method Holding file Fixed Link to source Delivery – Am I allowed into the link resolver? is the person authorized for delivery of the material based on the link resolver system definitions – userid/password, IP range Availability – Is this item available as no-fulltext or fulltext as part of the library’s collection in the link resolver holdings? Let’s talk about setting the visual indicators in Primo before going into these concepts more. (DEMO)

38 Availability Methods Code Name Description holdings_file Holdings File Link Resolver Availability based on Link resolver holdings file; Delivery based on Link Resolver (SFX/Alma) fixed_lr Fixed Availability fixed for all records of resource Delivery based on Link Resolver linktorsrc_only Link in record only Availability based on link in record Delivery based on link in record There are three availability methods for Primo Central records. Availability is the method of indicating a record is available to a person in Primo. A holdings file can be generated from your link resolver weekly or less often. This indicates if your library holds a specific issue of a title. Fixed link - A data provider can indicate a fixed availability for all of their resources. All Alexander street press items are marked full text available. Link to resource –A data provider can provide an in-record-link only for all records. This is the link you need to use. Availability comes from record as well as the link. To see a list of these providers, please check the document listed on this page. KCS Link to Resource (linktorsrc_only) Method Impact on Availability Status See Documentation Center > Ex Libris Documentation Center > Primo Central > Primo Central Indexing > Primo Central Availability

39 Availability Methods – fixed_lr
Fixed_lr found in the Activation Wizard Click the + by a provider name to view details Click Show Info This example has Fixed availability of ‘Full text’ available Please note the Show Info link. It is under this link you might find information on the availability setting for this resource. In addition to the Link to Resource file on the document portal, the Show Info link in the Activation wizard will tell you if availability has a special setting. Next slide

40 Availability Match Algorithm
Matching PC data against SFX/Link Resolver Holdings file ISBN; EISBN; ISSN; EISSN; * TITLE Coverage (Threshold & Embargo) Threshold - Year ; Volume ; Issue Embargo - days not available vs. days available Several parameters can tell me if an item is available for my institution. Can go down to level of an issue to say if item is available in PCI according to link resolver holdings data. This can be complex. If you wish holdings to include print and electronic holding, you must add the print holdings to the link resolver. Next slide Availabllity is going to look at the Primo Central data vs the link resolver holding file. It will try to match a key and then the key information for the journal against what is being searched to say whether or not a specific article is available to the person or not.

41 Match Algorithm - Holdings File (GS)
<institutional_holdings> <item type="electronic">   <title>Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking</title>   <issn> </issn>   <coverage>        <from>     <year>2002</year>     <volume>34</volume>     <issue>1</issue>    </from>    <to>     <year>2006</year>     <volume>38</volume>     <issue>8</issue>    </to>   </coverage>  </item> </institutional_holdings> Where GS = Google Scholar Example: Here, the site had the journal of money credit banding, isbn number From 2002 vol 34 #1 to 2006 vol 38 #8 Will take info. Review all items in PCI. Simple match against this coverage to set avail for each.

42 Match Algorithm - Examples
From Record Value To Outcome Y = 2002 V = N/A I = N/A Y = 2004 Y = 2006 Y = 2009 V = 34 I = 1 I = 4 V = 38 I = 8 I = 10 Available Not Available Available So, given the site has From 2002 vol 34 #1 to 2006 vol 38 #8 Not Available

43 Activation Concept – Three Main Options
Open Search; Restricted Delivery Restricted Search; Restricted Delivery Open access Primo Central So, PCI has hundreds of millions records. All these activated collections. Within those are activated collections are ones where you are not licensed. Do activate ones you have not licensed? Maybe – Primo can use the GetIt2 tab – More or services – to offer ILL services for resources which are not full text. You can activate more than what you have licensed as long as they are not restricted for Search. Or can activate only what is free. If you have no link resolver, this would be your situation – activate all the resources that do not have restricted search or delivery. Please Talk to your Exlibris implementation team early about your link resolver and how you will be creating your institutional holdings file SFX, Alma or another source. In licensed, you should only have those which include licensed materials. Demo: - show scope drop-down in My Profile – show how to build activated and licensed If expand beyond my library, get only activated items but will get ‘no full text’ items. If limit view to full text, do miss resources like Jstor that mark all items as no-full text. Global wind density; Full text available Facet – collection and creator name available Default search values – 2 options – everything activated discoverable whether full text or not (will get no full text and full text), whether licensed or not (facet for show FT will appear) Show only results with FT and licensed. Have facet to ‘expand beyond library collection’ to show none-fT licensed. All yellow: items most likely activated – your subscriptions and open access Question: Should the open search item with restricted delivery (blue shading be activated? These would be the equivalent of items with no full-text available as the site does not subscribe to these resources but could search citations.

44 Agenda Introduction Concept Processes Activation Front End
Alternative Coverage Demo Resources Welcome to Primo View (User Interface/Front End) Configuration For the next two hours you will learn how to customize the Primo User Interface. This class will focus on the UI only, during the Advanced Publishing Platform course you will learn how to use normalization rules to modify how data displays.

45 Depth of Primo Central Records
Comprehensive Metadata w/ Abstract Comprehensive Metadata w/ Abstract and Full Text Indexing abstract/full text for ~90% of records ~90% of records include topics/subject headings Comprehensive Metadata Primo Central has access to millions of records About 90% include Thick Metadata - subj headings About 90% include abstracts and/or full text Basic Metadata Basic Metadata w/ Full Text

46 Alternative Coverage Documentation Center > Ex Libris Documentation Center > Primo Central > Primo Central Indexing > Primo Central Content > Primo Central Index Collection List Alternative Coverage Analysis Information on Link Resolver/Open Access collections for which Ex Libris does not have an agreement with the collection provider Indicates the Primo Central collections to activate in order to achieve alternative coverage Primo Central Not Under Agreement Under Agreement There are aggregators who do not contribute to Primo Central. There are stories behind these and we are in continual discussions with the vendors. However, the resources provided by these vendors are often available through other providers. To help identify these titles in PCI, we provide an Alternative Coverage document. It lists, by vendor, the collections to activate in order to reach between 70 and 90% of these vendor’s collections from Primo. Link to this doc and how EBSCO or proquest.

47 Alternative Coverage - Example
Collections marked with (*) are in the process of being loaded to Primo Central and are not yet searchable. Collections marked with (**) are available to users from subscribing institutions only. All other collections are freely searchable by all Primo Central customers. There are aggregators who do not contribute to Primo Central.

48 Alternative Coverage – EBSCO
70-90% of EBSCO’s collection in Primo Central Non-journal based resources cannot be accessed (ARRC) via API or in Primo Turning EBSCO API on Implementation team will help with initial setup Facets API eliminates facet counts API eliminates ‘exclude’ option under ‘more’ in facets API entries in facets can be identified by entries in ALL CAPS Searching: Uses implied phrase (Primo uses AND) Uses single quote for phrases (Primo uses single or double quotes) EBSCO API – must login first if off-campus in order to get results Facets – work – ebsco working on change which will include counts Demo Show how you can tell it is setup – terms in all caps; lack of facet counts

49 SFX-EBSCO-Primo Interoperability
Included in Search Results because an EBSCO Database containing this citation is Active via the EBSCO API Included because the listed Targets offering this title (Nature) are Active in SFX (these will include, but are not limited to EBSCO Databases) In and below availability is based on a link in the record returned by EBSCO.   For linking however, Primo relied on the link resolver. The EBSCO record link is problematic for several reasons: Sometimes the link in the record is not a link to FT It seems like sometimes there is no link in the record (not available) but fulltext might in fact be available via the linker resolver There is a link in the record but it's not available via the link resolver (new in v4.5, see Primo v4 Highlights) Primo first checks SFX to see if there is a fulltext Target active If not, the link to fulltext in the EBSCO record is used

50 Alternative Coverage – FAQ
If I activate the alternative resource in Primo Central, will I see all of its resources in Primo? It depends whether the alternative resource is a subscription resource for you. ‘View Online’ is where you will see the Proquest, EBSCO and other fulltext subscription resources Any non-subscription or non fulltext link resolver resources will be under the ‘more’ tab So if I activate Bentham Science it won't show me all their stuff, only the Academic Search Complete titles? Under ‘View Online’, yes you will see Academic Search Complete titles and not Bentham Science (assuming you do not subscribe to Bentham Science and do subscribe to EBSCO)

51 Alternative Coverage – FAQ
What subjects/indexing is used in Primo for searching EBSCO through Primo Central? The indexing is contributed by the providers who submit resources to Primo Central (PC) (Bentham Science, Proquest, etc.) It would include the level of indexing indicated in the PC Index Collection List which could be fulltext, citation, abstract, etc. This would exclude EBSCO direct metadata What about the 10%-30% of data that is not in Primo Central with Alternative Coverage? If the research need cannot be met within Primo Central’s 600,000,000+ resources, then referring the patron to a librarian for assistance and/or native interfaces is an appropriate next step.

52 Primo Central – FAQ Will the institutional holdings file extracts be taken care of for TotalCare sites? Yes, SFX extracts were configured as part of SFX implementation. TotalCare sites can open a case to support if there are questions about how often the extract occurs and the day of the week of the extract. If you are a Primo customer, the implementation team completes initial setup/configuration of the Primo Central institutional holdings file . Will ongoing Primo Central activations be taken care of for TotalCare sites? No. Each institution must keep its own Primo Central up-to-date. (Unless it is part of a consortium with centralized holdings maintenance.)

53 Open Access Collections
Primo Central includes an Institutional Repository registration service. 28 institutions from 13 countries have registered institutional repositories. Please consider adding your open content data sources. OA sources available via Activation Wizard “Filter by” Primo Central – Primo Central Indexing – Open Access List Monthly Newsletter of new Primo Central content Open access (OA) is the practice of providing unrestricted access via the Internet to peer-reviewed scholarly research Encourage use of Open Access materials in instruction classes. These can be found in Open access collections Institutional repositories Within subscription journals. A column in all PCI collections list is dedicated to identifying resources containing open access content.

55 Match/Ranking: query and an item
Information Retrieval methods, adapted to the scholarly environment Type of information (metadata, abstract, or full text) Proximity of terms (as a phrase, in same field) Order of terms (in same order) Field in which query term appears (title, note) Exact match in title is best Term in title more than term in abstract May need to look at PNX to see all terms

56 Primo Central ScholarRank Score
Evaluation of an item’s academic significance Usage metrics : # of citations # of selections – bX article recommender Recency Type Peer review In addition, Primo Central has been modified this past year (2013) to include scholarly ranking. It looks at Internet tracked and other metrics to boost serial results in ranking.

57 PCI Relevancy building blocks
Query: Exact-title search Broad or narrow-topic search, currency, material type Document: Metadata, Abstract, Author Citations, downloads, page rank User: Search history, language, location Academic degree, area of study (personal settings) Pre-existing factors Above exist when doc published And post search factors such as citations, downloads and web page rankings Relevance ranking in Primo central has strengthened the exact=title search by recognizing industry research that says 50% or more of search are for known items. Looks there first. With broad topic searches, Primo ranks ‘reference entries’ above articles assuming the searcher is looking for broad overviews.

58 Titles included Subtitles
Search Sample Title search 4.4.1 Titles included Subtitles Adding in author dropped item from page 1 voina i mir Voina I mir tolstoy Check PNX for <Search> values Why????? First – journal of neuroscience (find book with title and subtitle) Pre 4.5.1, will not retrieve to first page because it searches both 245a and b Author title search Pre – actual book drops in relevancy from #1 to off the page

62 Cats dogs = cats AND dogs Boolean OR, NOT
Search Types - Simple Default “and” Cats dogs = cats AND dogs Boolean OR, NOT Cats OR dogs; Mouse NOT computer “phrase with quotes” “Chicago Bulls” Embedded (parenthesis) Basketball AND ((Celtics OR Boston) NOT Irish) Search terms typed in a simple box are, by default, connected with a Boolean AND. Boolean or and boolean not are supported in Primo. You do need to type the terms in ALL caps for Primo to recognize the connectors. Adding “quotes” around words makes these words a specific phrase to be searched as such in Primo. You can add parathensis in order to set precedence of operations as you did in Math – in other words, you tell the search how to group terms. Otherwise, the search is done in the order the words are found. You can, of course combine these search options together as well. DEMO a few examples – football “dallas cowboys”

63 Search - Wildcard ? – single character Wom?n = woman or women * - multi character Com*n = common, competition, etc. anywhere except 1st position

64 Search Types - Advanced
Same options as Simple Searches any scope (local or remote) Title “starts with” option Pre-search filters By same options as simple, I mean that boolean logic works in advance searching. Quotes work with advanced. They just work through the drop down menus. Go straight into pre-filters Show with DEMO In addition, Advance shows the first of our pre-search filters – next slide

65 Configured in back office ‘view
Pre Filters Simple Search Optional filters Configured in back office ‘view “starts with” only works with title in simple and advanced searching As you can see, we can add drop-down filters are for fields and search filters for contains, is exact and starts with.to the simple search. View wizard. – Tile for ???
