1 CONFLICT ESSAYS English 1201

2 ESSAY REFRESHER Basic five (5) paragraph essay.
Paragraph 1: Introduction with clear thesis statement and preview of topic sentences. Paragraphs 2-4: Body Paragraphs with clear topic sentences to support thesis statement. Paragraph 5: Conclusion using one of the common methods of concluding, such as Thesis Restatement or Closing by Return.

3 CONFLICT ESSAY MUSTS Items you MUST include in every conflict essay

4 INTRODUCTION Include title of selection Identify the type of conflict:
Internal person-vs-self External person-vs-person person-vs-nature person-vs-society Identify the main conflict that carries the plot Thesis Statement: comes from answering who and what is involved in the main conflict. Identify three (3) sub-plots to be discussed (these will be closely connected with your topic sentences) .

5 BODY PARAGRAPHS Identify sub-conflicts (MUST be linked to main conflict). A statement of how each sub-conflict is connected with the main conflict should serve as your three topic sentences. Discuss and outline how each sub-conflict resolves or complicates the main conflict. Always prove how sub-conflicts support or complicate main conflict with evidence (quotes).

6 BODY PARAGRAPHS Three (3) body paragraphs MUST deal with either two (2) sub-conflicts that complicate the main conflict and one (1) that helps resolve the main conflict OR one (1) sub-conflict that complicates the main conflict and two (2) sub- conflicts that help resolve the main conflict. Third body paragraph MUST always be a paragraph dealing with a sub-conflict that helps resolve the main conflict. When discussing each sub-conflict, always refer to how it either complicates or resolves the main conflict.

7 CONCLUSION Should deal with how main conflict has been resolved through sub-conflict(s). May also summarize conflicts again. Be sure to use one of the methods of conclusion, such as Closing by Return or Thesis Restatement.

8 In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the major conflict is man vs society, where Atticus Finch is trying to help his children develop into open-minded individuals who try to understand others before judging them, even though they are growing up in a time and place where racism and prejudice dominate. This essay will examine three sub-conflicts that help to bring out this major conflict throughout the novel. These conflicts include the external conflict of the children’s fascination with Boo Radley, a shy man who keeps to himself, causing the people to talk and make up stories about him simply because they don’t understand him. Another sub-conflict is Mrs. Dubose’s internal struggle with her morphine addiction and how the way her addiction causes others to misunderstand her. The final sub-conflict that helps to bring out the main conflict is the man-vs-society conflict surrounding the Tom Robinson trial, where a black man is on trial for a crime he didn’t commit but is found guilty for one reason: he’s a black man.

9 TIPS FOR STRONG ESSAY WRITING

10 ESSAY WRITING TIPS Write in Third Person, present tense:
“This essay shows how the sub-conflict of Boo Radley…” rather than “I have shown how Boo Radley helped…” Write with a tone of confidence and conviction: Word choice like “proves” rather than “may show” When organizing three body paragraphs, use second strongest points as first body paragraph, weakest points as middle body paragraph and strongest points for last body paragraph. Leave something for your reader to think about in your conlusion.
