1 THE PRACTICAL EFFECTS OF POVERTY

2 HEALTH Poor diet causes health problems.
Poor housing contributes to diseases such as bronchitis and low grade infections. Depression and despair. Accidents are caused by lack of safety equipment or cheap goods.

3 POOR HOUSING Housing may be cramped and difficult to heat.
Furniture may be unsafe. Choice of housing may be limited.

4 POOR ACHEIVEMNET AT SCHOOL
Parents may not have the resources to help children, e.g. books, space to do homework. Children may lack confidence as they feel ‘different ‘ from other children. Teachers may have different expectations of children living in poverty.

5 Parents may not have the emotional strength to support their children or may have lost faith in the education system. Parents may not be able to pay for extras such as swimming lessons, football or rugby training/ games etc.

6 DEPRESSION AND DESPAIR
Constant worry about money can cause depression and tension in families. Parents can feel depressed because they cannot see how they are going to change their situation Self – esteem and morale can be low.

7 Parents can be embarrassed because of claiming benefit or asking for help, e.g. not paying the full amount for school trips.
