1 Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 November 2007 Project: IEEE P Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: Data Rate Issue in the draft PAR of BAN Date Submitted: November 14, 2007 Source: Huai-Rong Shao, Chunhui (Allan) Zhu, Sandra Qin, Harkirat Singh, Yong Liu, Pengfei Xia, Edwin Kweon, JaeYoung Ryu, Jeong Ho Lee, Jisung Oh, Jamin Lee, Seongsoo Kim, Scott Lee, Dongjae shin, K.H. Lee, Taehan Bae, Shannon.park, J.H. Lee, giriraj.g, EunTae Won, Chiu Ngo Contact: Huai-Rong Shao, Samsung Electronics Voice: , Re: [] Abstract: Discuss the problems of data rate specified in the draft PAR 15-07/0575r08. First is the mismatching between the scope section and the purpose section. The second is to discuss whether 10 Mbps is enough for the BAN applications. Purpose: Request the BAN group to increase the maximal data rate to meet the requirements of BAN applications . 2 Draft PAR of 15-07/0575-09 In 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard
November 2007 Draft PAR of / In 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard Support for Quality of Service (QoS), extremely low power, and data rates up to 10 Mbps is required while simultaneously complying with strict non-interference guidelines where needed. In 5.4 Purpose of Proposed Standard Data rates, typically up to 10Mbps, can be offered to satisfy an evolutionary set of entertainment and healthcare services. Does 10Mbps is enough for BAN applications? Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung

3 Video/Image resolution
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 November 2007 Video/Image resolution HD TV/Display interface standard such as HDMI 1.3 supports 1080p with deeper color Uncompressed video data rate >=3Gbps Bit rate 1920*1080*3*8 (or 10,12, 16). Handheld devices now already support HD video Cannon HV20 HD camcorder Sony GV-HD700E HD Video Walkman etc Video glasses support high resolution now I-O Display i-glasses VIDEO - Head mounted display x 600 etc. Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung John Doe, Some Company

4 Possible Data Rate of MPEG2 Stream
November 2007 Possible Data Rate of MPEG2 Stream Used as standard video format for DVD video, A/V broadcast (TV, HDTV, Terrestrial, Cable, Satellite, High Speed Inter/Intranet) 4~8 Mbps for TV quality, for better quality at SDTV resolutions (BT.601) 18-80 Mbps for HDTV applications Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung

5 November 2007 MPEG4/H.264 AVC Stream Useful standard for portable devices and internet video applications Data rate usually from 64Kbps to 15Mbps, but can be up to 240Mbps for HD video Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung

6 3D Video for CE Entertainment Applications
November 2007 3D Video for CE Entertainment Applications Multiple HD MPEG2 or H.264/MPEG-4 AVC streams are transmitted simultaneously At least 3 streams More bandwidth is required Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung

7 Medical Image/video Applications
November 2007 Medical Image/video Applications Lossless compression may be needed to keep image quality Image resolution even bigger than HD video for CE devices Usually compression ratio is about 3:1 to 10:1 10 Mbps may not be enough to support medical image/video sensor allications Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung

8 Conclusion 10 Mbps is not enough to support many BAN applications
November 2007 Conclusion 10 Mbps is not enough to support many BAN applications Recommendation option 1 Change to data rate to 100 Mbps in the PAR document Recommendation option 2 Move data rate parameter from PAR to technical requirement document Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung

9 November 2007 Thank you! Huai-Rong Shao et al., Samsung
