Welcome to my presentation on ICDDR,B & incepta
2
ICDDR,B ICDDR,B stands for INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR DIARRHOEAL DISEASE RESERCH, BANGLADESH It is an international health research institution located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The centre was established in 1960 as the Cholera Research Laboratory (CRL) The CRL was internationalized and became ICDDR,B in 1978.
3
VISION All people, especially the poor, can become healthier and can reach their full potential through the application of new knowledge. Mission To develop and promote realistic solutions to the major health, population and nutrition problems facing the poor people of Bangladesh and other settings.
4
ICDDR,B Organogram Although ICDDR,B has six divisions our attention mainly goes to laboratory science division
5
Laboratory Science Division Organogram
Our visited research and service labs are immunology, parasitology, virology, emtric microbiology, animal resource, nutritional biochemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical biochemistry.
6
Immunology Laboratory
Head of the department : Dr. Ferdausi Qadri The objectives of the work carried out in this laboratory are to Strengthen and increases capabilities in rapid diagnosis of enteric pathogens using monoclonal antibodies and to contribute to understanding the immune response of diseases and compare these with responses resulting from immunization with vaccines. Interested organisms of this lab are cholera, shigella, Typhoid, E.coli Overall working procedures Technique used in this lab : ELISA,ELISPOT,ALS,FACS.
7
Clinical biochemistry Laboratory
Head of the Department: Askish Kumar Chowduary The clinical biochemistry laboratory is a very advanced Lab for analysis of specimens of blood, serum, plasma, stool, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), intra venous fluid (IVF) etc. The laboratory continued its support to Institute of Public Health (IPH) for quality control of IVF for electrolytes, glucose, and pH. The laboratory is equipped with various high-tech equipment. Equipments are : Electrolits analyzer semi automatic biochemistry analyzer automatic biochemistry analyzer hormone analyzer atomic absorption spectrophotometer osmometer
8
Parasitology Lab Head: Rashidul Haque
The Parasitology Laboratory is primarily working on amoebiasis and has recently started to work on malaria and leishmaniasis. Apart from studies on Entamoeba histolytica infection, a new area of interest of the laboratory is helminthic infection and micronutrient deficiency. The common test of this lab are : Real time PCR PCR Microscopic Identification Working Procedure : ELISA (Antigen Detection) Microscopy for target parasite Sample (Stool) ------ ------ Sequencing and comparing With gene banks ------ PCR or RTPCR ------
9
Clinical Microbiology Laboratory
Head of the Department: MD. Khorshed Alam The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory provides diagnostic support to patients of the Clinical Research and Service Centre, staff clinic, & travelers’ clinic of ICDDR, B. Apparatus : BacT/ALART 3D Incubator Media (SS agar, TTG agar, Chocolate agar, blood agar) Working procedure: Collection of sample ---- Autoclave the Dehydrated media ---- Incubation of the Culture -----Colony picking Biochemical analysis Serological analysis ---Drug resistance for treatment determination.
10
Virology Laboratory Head of the Department: Tasnim Azim
The lab is involved in studies on the viral aetiology of diarrhoea with emphasis on Group A rotavirus and is also responsible for conducting tests for HIV related to surveillance and research. The main viruses under study: Rota virus. HIV virus. Dengue virus HCV HBV Influenza Nipah Fig : Rota virus The common technique of this lab are:RTPCR, Fluorescence activated cell sorter, ELISA PCR,
11
Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory
Head of the Department : M.A. Wahed This department works on the analysis of both macro and micro nutrients Analysis of micronutrients is performed by HPLC ,sandwich ELISA Macro nutrient analysis is performed by Protein – Kjeldhal Method Total calorie determination – Bomb calorimeter Trace element (Zn, Cu, Mg) and toxic metal (As, Cd) analysis – AAS New methods developed in this Lab for : a. determination of arsenic in biological samples b. preparation of emulsifying agent using neem oil
12
Enteric microbiology laboratory
This laboratory is working in the development and application of phenotypic and molecular techniques to identify and characterize diarrhoeagenic organisms from clinical sources and the environment. The common enteric bacteria studied in this laboratory are– Shigella flexneri Sulmonella Vibrio cholera Research or Typing: Phenotypic characterization Genotypic/molecular characterization Phenotypic characterization: 1.Serotyping: 2.Anti-biogram: 3.Biochemical behavior study Genotypic/molecular characterization: 1.Plasmid profiling: 2.PFGE (pulse field gel electrophoresis)
13
Animal Resource Branch
Head of the Department: A.S.M. Hamidur Rahman Common laboratory animals: Rabbit (Newzeland white). Guinea pig (Hartly Strain). Rat Mouse( Swiss White.)

Major Departments in the production
Technical Service Research & Development (R&D) Production Quality Control Ware House We have visited production ,R & D and quality control (QC department) Fig :Worker in production
17
Production Unit Consists of two separate units in two different buildings : 1.Cephalosporine formulation unit 2.Non-Cephalosporine formulation unit
18
Production Unit Contd……..
A highly skilled team is dedicated in production with consistent quality underly cleared standard procedures (SOP). In complaints with the procedures and instruction of ISO9001 quality system. Production facility : Consits of six different multi storied building Most modern pharmaceuticals production equipment imported from USA,UK,EU,Japan, Malyasia.
