1 2.2 Living Things Need Each Other

2 Exploration Question: How do plants and animals depend on each other?
Procedure: Three people have pieces of tape on their finger and sit in a circle back to back. Paper balls are in the middle of their circle. As people try and take a paper ball, the three people put a piece of tape on them.

3 Goals Plants and animals depend on each other to survive and thrive.
Plants provide food and shelter. Animals pollinate flowers and spread seeds.

4 Key Terms An ecosystem is all the intersecting parts of an environment. All of the living things in an ecosystem are biotic factors. Plants, animals, and microorganisms All of the non-living things in an ecosystem are abiotic factors. Temperature, rainfall, snow, sunlight, soil

5 Animals need plants A) Food - leaves, roots, stems, berries, seeds, fruit - Meat eaters eat plant eaters (at some point in food chain) B) Shelter - nests, dens, burrows- hiding spots from predators

6 II. Plants Need Animals Pollination - animals carry cells from on plant to another. From the stamen to the pistil.- bees, birds, squirrels, etc. B) Seed dispersal - animals spread seeds- carry and drop- animal waste- stick to fur

7 Symbiotic Relationships
When organisms (of any kind) use or rely on another in some way. A) Mutualism - (+ +) - bird on water buffalo B) Parasitism - (+ -) - tick on a dog C) Commensalism - (+ nothing) - insect on a leaf
