This is because the moon rotates and revolves at the same rate.

These are the different shapes of the lit portion of the moon.

They are caused by the revolution of the moon around the earth.

This is because the lit half of the moon is not facing the earth.

As the moon is revolving around the earth the earth is also revolving around the sun and it takes a little time for the moon to catch up to finish the phases.
