1 Neurosurgical training in Kenya: our 10 year experience (2006-2016)

2 INTRODUCTION Kenya population appr 40 million.
Close to 30 percent of the absolute poor live in rural areas and 10 percent in urban areas and depend on Government subsidised health services (cost-sharing). Two tertiary care Public Hospitals offering neurosurgical services (Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret) In 2006, Kenya had 17 neurosurgeons. The University of Nairobi, Kenyatta National Hospital, has so far trained 10 neurosurgeons (August 2016)

3 The University of Nairobi MMed Neurosurgery program
Started in 2006 with two students sponsored by The Kenyatta National Hospital and the University of Nairobi through a Gandhi Memorial Scholarship The program is now an established Regional Program with students from Rwanda, Botswana, Zambia and Mauritius and Sierre Leone

4 Master of Medicine in Neurosurgery
This is a 6 year program similar to programs elsewhere Part I year 1&2, Common Foundation Course: Surgical Anatomy, Surgical Physiology, Clinical Neurosurgery, Principles of Surgery Part II year 3: Clinical neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Neuro-otology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Neurology. Part III year 4-6: Year 4-Neuro-oncology, Neurotrauma, Peripheral Nerves, Pain management. Year 5-Neuro-oncology, Spinal surgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery. Year 6- Stereotactic/functional Neurosurgery. Skull base surgery, Cerebrovascular Surgery. Dissertation and Surgery Log book
