2. Math 2: 6-6 Dividing Fractions & Mixed #’s
The mean, or average, of a set of numbers is found by dividing the sum by the number of items in the data set.
Ex.: {1, 1, 5, 2, 2, 4, 2, 5} = 22
= 2.75 8
The mean of this set of data is 2.75.

The median is the middle number when the data are in order from least to greatest.
Ex.: {7, 11, 15, 17, 20, 20, 25}
Median = 17
If they are not in order you must
put them in order first!

If there are two numbers in the middle then you need to find their mean.
Ex.: {7, 11, 15, 16, 17, 20, 20, 25}

5. The mode is the piece of data that occurs most often.

The mode is the piece of data that occurs most often.
Ex.: {7, 11, 15, 16, 17, 20, 20, 25}
Mode = 20
If they all occur the same number of times there is NO mode.
There can be more than one mode. Ex: {1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5}, the modes are 1 & 2.

The range of a set of data is the difference between the highest and lowest values of the set.
Example: In the set
{4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 3, 2, 9, 7, 8},
the range would be; 10 – 2 = 8.
